Guest pat-r-dale
Hello guys i was wondering if I could get some expert knowledge from you?? Ive a 2yr old collie who ive always fed dry food and a 4m old patterdale which at the mo feed dry food. All the terriers ive owned have always been on dry aswell. I really want to start feeding raw meat but know nothing with regards to how much i should feed etc as ive always weighed dry food. Also should i get it from the butchers and what meat is best? Beef chicken etc. Would my dogs get upset stomachs when i change it? I would obviously introduce over a week or so wouldnt I? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated as id reaaly like to start feeding it! Thanks, Neil. chuck a rabbit in the dog run mate for your dog and go to work and by the time you get home chances are it would of eat it,i feed all mine meat ranging from beef ,pork, chicken ,turkey,if its meat they have it,i do give them dry food as well but only if i forget to get food out of the freezer the day before, nothing complicated about it mate your dog will soon adjust, might prefer some types of meat to others but it will eat it,i worm my dogs every 3 months and they work as well as the next dog and look good on it,as far as how much food to feed it i make sure my dogs eat what they want,as long as they wormed they will not eat for the sake of it,my bull cross lurcher eats 3 turkey drumsticks and will also have 2 rabbit heads most days, get it down them ,keep hunting Thanks wife, appreciate it! Ive had someone say to me as soon as i buy the meat freeze it, then defrost it to feed to the dogs, it sounds like you do the same is this best? Do you just buy mince etc from the butchers? Ive heard tripe is good too! I was going to do that with a rabbit coz i thought well thats what i feed my ferrets so it cant do the dogs any harm can it. And im sure we all forget from time to time that they are wild animals really! And thats what they would be eating if we wasent around to put a bowl out for them! Thanks again, Neil. Hardfeather 56
I use fairly the same diet as Chilli I should imagine,I feed either beef, lamb, chicken or tripe and liquidise apple, peas, lettuce and tomato as the main veg base and add other seasonal safe stuff 30 % veg 70% meat. When I first started feeding barf I had help from Molly on it and Socks too there's f**k all he doesn't know about nutrition(man and dog) Icouldn't believe how little I had to feed to maintain my dogs and also how little was shit out the other end compared to shop bought foods,so keep at it you aint gonna do them any harm and you'll adjust as you want if they start runnig light adjust the measurements yis chris ps Don't forget the bones, uncooked lamb ones for mine all butchers have them just ask
Guest hairypie
folk say dont feed the dogs rabbits with fur and gut in but ive been doing it for as long as i can remember and it hasnt done my dogs no harm ok its not a nice thought of the dog eating guts and fur but as i said it dont do them no harm infact if you think about it its more than likely the best way to feed them , by feeding the fur and gut your dogs get all the greens they need and they are part digested to so it wont be so hard for the dog to digest ,ok i know that some of you will be thinking eww and all that kinda shite and some will pull me on the fack that rabbits cary worms but if you worm your dog regular there is no problem , one rabbit per day will do eny meduim sise dog and while feeding this diet you are advised to fast the dog atleast once a week , i wouldnt advise this diet to be fed to house dweling dogs as for the rabbit fur and the rabbit gut tents to make a right mess not to mention the smell  i also feed dry food in the middle of the week purly so i can add fish oils and multi vits , what ive found with the dog world is that some folk take it to far and get all tec and go to deep into it when realy the right way is stareing you in the face , . wife 1
i dont always freeze my rabbits before i give them to the dogs, for instance as i come home from lamping i have got to go past my dog runs to put rabbits from the nights lamping in my freezer,i usually take a few out of the lamping bag and put them straight in to each dog run for the lurchers or russels, saying this freezing can kill any bacteria that could be harmful to your dog,i simply chuck mine in as it is fur ,guts the lot, worm my dogs every 3 months and they work well and look well or at least i hope they do,i do well at the shows anyway not that this means anything to there working cabability as the real trophy is in the working field, what 1 has to think dogs have not got this far in civilisation by munching on biscuit meal, god did not give dogs those big teeth for crunching biscuit, alot of lads seem shocked when i say i feed my dogs whole rabbit ,but why not,as far as raw meat giving your dog the shits this is something i have seen when a dog has been on biscuit meal and not seen much meat in its diet, simply introduce small amounts mixed in with biscuit meal say 75 percent biscuit and 25 percent meat to start with and with time take away the biscuit meal and add more meat, the dog will soon adjust to its new diet,i do feed my dogs biscuit meal but again only if i have not got meat out of the freezer the night before,i find my dogs seem to enjoy eating meat and look better on it than they do on meat, keep hutning
Guest EWOK
We raise hounds here and some have as many as 40 and they feed theirs raw turkeys regularly. As there is alot of turkeys and hogs raised here there is always dead to be picked up if wanted. Right now I have my dogs close to my house, yards, so I'm not feeding much meat as it makes such a mess, all those feathers, and smell, somehow they never eat all of it but there are many here that have there pens in the woods and the dogs look ok that eat this. Just one more question if you dont mind, if you run out of rabbits in the 'off' season do you just buy mince from the butchers etc? If so what type do you go for? Just one more question if you dont mind, if you run out of rabbits in the 'off' season do you just buy mince from the butchers etc? If so what type do you go for?in the summer mate if i dont have any bunnys in the freezer i i feed them pigeon breasts and pheasent breasts,i do alot of pigeon shooting in the summer and the lads i go with only have 2 or 3 for themselves ,i have the rest of them,do some good bags in summer ranging from 15s to around birds when everything goes right,i used to work in a slaughter house and it is not far from me so itend to get alot of my food from there,if you take a look in countrymans weekly it usually gives you numbers of places that sell frozen tripe,if you live in gwent area i could put you on to a supplier which is a freind of mine that sells turkey necks and also drumsticks ,hearts liver ,wings ,i dont chuck the pigeons in as they are however or the pheasents due to the feathers blowing around my run,i have done it and woke up to feathers everywhere,i simply skin the birds as i am going through the days birds that have been shot and the ones that are a bit smashed i give to the dogs,i was a bit worried at one time as the dogs obviously eat the shot that is in the birds and alot of it is lead ,i asked the vet his advice on this and he said unless the shot size was the size of a marble there is no chance of it getting stuck in the dogs system,it all passes through,i have fed my dogs on pigeons and pheasents that have been shot with a twelve for the last 12 years and never had no problems, thinking about it though when i have had to pick them up for whatever reason they have seemed a bit heavy, could be all that lead in them, only joking,on a serious note depending on how many dogs you have you could do no worse in buying a small freezer,i have 2 chest freezers and they are all full of whatever i have, the only things that i dont put in there are fox and rat, crows ,jackdaws, however squirrels ,hares rabbit, pigeon, doves, ducks ,pheasent, all go in there,if i dont eat it it gets fed to the dogs or the ferrets, keep hunting mate,by the way do you know how to put up pics up on this site if you do could you explain step by step ,cheeers kev, will put some pics up then of my mutts
