Deker 3,478
hi all i want to know is what is the difference beween rim fire and centre fire. i used a .22 once for rabbit hunting what would this have been i also used a big rifle used for stag hunting like wise what would this have been. lso what are the most common calibres for different quarry? The difference is simple, a centrefire has a percussion cap in the centre of the cartridge case which is hit by the firing pin, this cap ignites the propellant in the cartridge and bang. With a rimfire, the firing pin hits the rim of the cartridge where the original percussion take place and the propellant is ignited. Rimfire are smaller, less powerful calibres, and centrefire more powerful for reasons of chemistry and physics! With regards what you have used in the past and what is the best calibre for each quarry, well, not enough space, and open to considerable debate anyway!! Quote Link to post
jamiethehunter 0
Deker has explained the differences and as he's said the calibre thing is a big topic so i will tell you what i use and i must stress this is my personal choice not a reccomendation. I use .22lr for rabbits, .223 for fox, .243 for fox and deer up to roe and 30-06 for larger deer and boar. I've settled on these after 25 years of shooting and i'm too set in my ways to change now. Every shooter should try as much as they can and work out what suits them best. Quote Link to post

Guest air gunner
yep it was a .22lr i have to say it was good to use and the rabbits sure did drop the first one i shot did a massive backflip. with the air gun i have only ever got a rabbit to frontflip. but what was the stag gun? arveyboy 0
could have been anything from .243 upwards. any more details on the stag shooting might help get the right calibre. recoil? was it a syndicate? shooting with a friend? pay for a day or weekend. where abouts did you do it? jack Quote Link to post
karlp86 0
but what was the stag gun? the stag hunting shell has 7mm-08 REM F C does this mean anything? well quite simply it means the calibre you used was the 7mm-08 remington. there is some info about it here if you are interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7mm-08 atb karl Quote Link to post
salukiwhippet 6
Yep, it was a 7mm-08 and the cartridge (or the brass at least) was made by Federal (F C as in Federal cartridge). Nice ammo but expensive (their premium .243 is £30 for 20 ) HTH, James Quote Link to post

Guest air gunner
Well actually a friend of mines mum was visiting her friend for the summer so invited me to her friends estate in scotland called straithvaich, before the stalkers took out a group they tested the gun and let us have a shot or two. The recoil was pretty heavy. but yea thats all i know. cheers for the info. Also is a .22lr suitable for fox and muntjack? just wondering because when out rabbiting with a friends .22lr we saw some foxes and a muntjack. Quote Link to post
karlp86 0
fox is debateble, some say yes others say no. i'm in the boat that thinks fox should be shot with a centre fire rifle, not rimfire. muntjac is a deffinate no no for a .22lr!!! atb Karl Quote Link to post

The .22LR is open to debate on Fox, many police regions flatly refuse to allow it so a potential problem area. Muntjac is now legal with a MINIMUM .22 certrefire, 50g Expanding ammo and 1000ft lb, so .22LR is an absolute NON starter!! Quote Link to post
