comanche 3,061
Last time I saw Jeff was at a country show with a mole puppet .....I listened for a bit, but couldn't take it any more. Ref the trapman advert ........ those dufus lookalikes dont look good at all. Why would a pro mole catcher allow links to fake traps? I know just what you mean about that *****ing mole puppet ,the lawn -shark bollocks and the crap Chinky traps he sells to the public at shows at a massive mark-up! Sadly I know from talking to customers that the image of mole-trapping is actually being damaged by the presentation techniques used at the Guild stand at shows and the fudging answers they have been given when asking for genuine advice about catching their own problem mole . It would be very wrong of me to criticise the Guild itself or it's aims of which I know nothing but first hand-knowledge of its public face indicate that a re-think in that direction would be wise .... longnetter 32
I joined The Giuld of British Molecatchers a couple months ago and have been very impressed with them. Passed their level 2 accreditation test and I 've had a couple of jobs from the web site and all for free can't be bad. So what do I get from British Trad. Mole Catchers for seventyfive quid!! Matt 160
Some very mixed opinions coming out in this thread. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that Jeff is doing alot of good getting people together. I agree with some of the sentiments expressed in this thread about the quality of traps available, and the fact that the Guild seem to be promoting what many people consider to be inferior traps. I can't really comment about the 'show' that Jeff puts on, as I've never seen it; but I'm fairly sure it will be aimed at people who know little or nothing about moles, and would probably be quite irritating to those who do. I've very mixed feelings about the accreditation schemes that seem to be expanding every time I look at the site. I had a look at the level one test paper, but to be honest, haven't bothered to do anything with it. I'm not sure if knowing how much oxygen a mole needs to survive is an advantage when it comes to trapping them, and unless the tests are done under exam conditions, I don't think their value will be heeded. I suppose it's something else that may impress a potential customer, but whether it would secure more work I doubt. As for three levels of accreditation, I think that is going to far. The guild have concentrated alot of effort on getting daily checking made mandatory by the government - something that I'm sure that none of us would consider to be a bad thing - but personally, I think that there are more important issues which should be addressed now; like trap quality and availability, and the use of burrow blasters. The BTMR is something else. I've never bothered to join, partly because I'm as tight as a ducks arse, and £75 represents a lot of dosh for me these days. I also think that someone, somewhere, is making a nice little business out of all those £75 cheques, and the training courses etc that are also on offer. My NPTA membership costs £90 per year (if I remember correctly) and they seem to do much more for that money than the BTMR do for the £75, but each to his or her own. One thing that cannot be denied is that Jeff has a passion for moles and mole trapping, and works very hard to promote that. He's a genuine guy and that counts for alot in my book. Quote Link to post
