a good finding dog

Recommended Posts

well for me the lurcher finds the (new earths) then the terrier comes off the lead and finds under ground . in my eyes thats a good finding dog :D

what if you want to get a coarse for your lurcher stephen? would you not have your terriers lose to flush out something?not being cheeky now, just asking.

whenever i go hunting the first thing we do is let the dogs lose.thats what i call hunting.but i know felas who go out with the dogs on leads and bring them up to the set because they know where the sets are.now ive got no problem with this, each to their own,i just dont think its as exiting as letting your dog find his own game and seeing how good he really is. any thoughts on this?

[/qYour right I think it makes interesting hunting if you can let the dogs run free and find, it all depends on the ground your hunting and how well you know it but as you know two or more terriers to ground in one set can spell disaster. A lot of the land we hunt is littered with BW sets and we avoid these at all cost one really hard dog in these could end in tragedy two or more doesn’t bare thinking about.

We start ratting in earnest end of Jan when the shooting ends and we will run a mixed pack of 9 or so terriers and a couple of lurchers we do the same every year and have had no major problems we’ve had some interesting days with a mixed bag at the end of the day but we always have a quick check of the area before we let the dogs loose

a good lurcher stays out, listens to the terriers and waits for the break, and if hes good he'l be in the right place.thats why they bred the colliexgreyhound, speed of the greyhound, brain of the collie.

Sounder correct me if I am wrong here but what you are saying is you have your terriers loose while walking up to DEN not SETT (use your head before you write stuff on here) and they find an occupied den and all terriers enter there selfs ?

we let one terrier collared up run loose with the hounds. and they find their own holes and hunt cover after foxes. its good for them imo. the las 2 foxes we dug one was ran to ground by hounds and terrier with terrier following him straight to ground and the other fox was found when we noticed the terrier was missing and we walked back along the ditch to find him squeezing into a tight fox hole. so letting a SINGLE terrier run loose is fine but more then one is asking for a double up :angry::angry: we learned by our own mistakes, so now its strictly one terrier loose at any one time.

Awe right Sounder, I am the same as yourself i like the dogs to hunt up especially if the cover is thick but as was quoted there is the pro's and cons with this the dogs going too far in front and more than one down at any time, sure way to get the other smashed if it's pushing on, the other bad thing if the dogs no the terrian and he gets there well before you and you may have missed a bolter, but as you say every one to there own, i like mine huntin. :clapper:

when we are out on our own digging i sometimes in small covers let a terrier with a loctor off to hunt the cover but i never let two or more earthdogs off together dont want them to all go to ground.on most sundays i go out with a local mans pack of about 10 beaglexrussels x springers and i keep my terriers on the lead untill one gose to ground.and one or two of the luchers do hunt the cover with the beating dogs.

You say dogs ,so do you double up ?

And for me the definition of a good finding dog is done below ground

we go out with a pack of terriers and a lurchers and they all work well together,i know where your coming from, you dont want all your dogs in at the one time, maybe im old school .when i go out anyway im not goin after the one thing.and as for the definition of a good finding dog? im on about nose. any dog can find if hes brought up on a lead.and a pup should be trained to livestock first day if hes on a lead or not.

ANY DOG CAN FIND??

YOUR'E FULL OF SHIT!

we hunt with one digging terrier off the lead with the cover dogs one dog one hole ,what happens when fooking 2 or three terriers go aground together .Il tell ye what happens the front dog gets hammered and the second dog gets his arse and legs ate off him by the third bloody dog so thats why we walk up to earths with the terriers on leads

one dog to ground and thats it.seen a cracking dog killed to ground last year because some twat dropped another dog in.if they aint stock broken then they aint worth the time of day.just my opinion. :whistling:
