What age should you properly start training?

I have a GSP who will sit, stay pretty well, recall brilliantly and retrieve tennis balls. He needs a little work on the lead.

Should I start gundog training yet ?

And if so which book should I choose ?

Ideally as young as possible,

I start mine as young as a few month's with play retreiving.

And seriously start at about 8-10 month's.

 

18 month's is a bit old to start, And will mostly be reliant on the last owner's training.

my dog sits,stays,walks on lead, recalls really well but still room for improvement.

He also fetches balls and sticks.

Is it too late to train him to be a gundog ?

I mean just retrieveing shot game nothing masssive just rough shoots and toodling with an air rifle .

get the recall and sitting and stay ingrained 100% then progress to dead game after he is steady on dummies and handsignals which is next.

donnot start hunting him til he is retrieving to hand and has a concrete stop and recall.
