I dont know if this one has come up before. At what stage or age shoud a dog have it,s first run. Will it depend on breed, age, ground ,ability day, night. Some people say run the dog as soon as it,s ready. The problem is a lot dont know when that is.Some people cant wait They just whant to talk about what the dog has done and at what age.I Know when you get your first dog it,s hard. You are champing at the bit for your first kill you will make mistakes and run the dog to early)BUT WHY WHY WHY do we make the same mistake again and again :wallbash::wallbash: I have always said a young dog should never be run untill it,s well trained. An untrained dog is a liabilty to you and all around you.Dont listen to your mates who might be slagging you.If you know your dog you will know when the time has come. What do you think. :victory::victory:

catcher mate ,,,,,,,,, I was taught by some very clever dog owners many moons ago !!! :whistling: that the 1st year of a dogs life is training , training, training ,, ie , sit, stay, lie down and of course how to over come obsticals such as fences all types barbed and electric and variouse other things that will help the dog along the way like posisioning youre dog at holes for bolting purposes !!!! Man did i get stick when i just started out !!!!The words GET THAT f*****g DOG UNDER CONTROL springs to mind :icon_redface: 1nc you have that bond with youre dog it's THEN time to take it out ,,first start on rabbits as keano says , let the dog find its feet and know its quarry

ONLY THEN ,, When you feel that the dog is coming on well do you start moving it on to bigger and better stuff and even then take it slow !! As i have learned over the years TIME AND EFFORT ON BOTH THE DOG AND OWNER IS EVERYTHING !!!!!! :toast:

Just my oppinion but i'm sure it aint a bad 1 !!

Good input anythingoes you rise a lot of good question.A lot of people who use terriers dont like to dig and will use a good trained running dog to pick up the bolt. I have been there saying my dog is shit hot only to get a red neck when the b*****d moves whitout being told. You have said it all TIME AND EFFORT=GREAT REWARD :clapper::clapper: :clapper:

i had 4 pups same litter and run them all at same time on ferreted rabbits let out of sack five times. the same dog caught all five at 5 months, put all my time into that dog and run hares with mum at 9 months september time. at 10 months he was catching on his own but obviously lacked experience around hedges, at 21 months he was catching most i put on and now hes 9 never jacked and caught all over country on hard/soft/open /field land. is this right. i dont know but other pups were rubbish, i think best know early if any good so if not you can start over. not hard runs just so they know.
