Richie10 345
Hi, I have just started going ferreting again after going when I was a small lad, been twice, caught one. Land I have permission on is pretty hard going. Anyway I have a locator with collar, I usually just use the one ferret, but on large warrens I have start putting another one in but without a collar on as I only have the one. I have never been shown the rope using collars but I am learning slowly. My thinking on this is that if one kills the other would find it aswell and so I would be able to dig to both of them at the same time. Is this wrong to do? They have been principally pets for me and my boys so I don't want to lose any. Any suggestions, thoughts or name calling, welcome. Rich Edited January 23, 2009 by Richie10 Quote Link to post

stubby 175
same as magwitch has said richie, save up for another collar, anything could happen underground, your quoting wanting to use two on larger warrens, so it makes sense that they may not even meet up underground Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
If it was me I would put them down one at a time, you will get less bolted than using two, but a least if your ferret gets stopended you'll be able to locate it. Quote Link to post
pashley1988 0
just stick to putting em in one at a time mate until you have another collar, i have lost a couple but been lucky enough to get most of em back and its not a nice feeling once you've lost one Nick Quote Link to post
Paid 935
When I had 2 collars, I would still put 4 ferrets in bigger warrens, but used to collar the older 2, as they were more likely to kill below ground. I never had any problems doing this, but that doesnt mean you won't, it's a risk you have to decide yourself to take, or not too take, and knowing your ferrets helps a little. I now have 4 collars, so no worries now. Quote Link to post
masmiffy 82
If you only have one collar I would, personally, put it on a hob if you have one? Let the jill run free and if she does lay up put the hob in, he should find her and either put her off or stay with her and the rabbit! Sure people will have other ideas? Quote Link to post
Richie10 345
Thanks chaps, I will heed the advice. I have the mk111 but not sure how you would use 2 collars, will have to get one and try. Not sure how much longer we have though for this season. Quote Link to post
pashley1988 0
i work all the way through to march then it starts getting over grown and you wil be seeing alot more baby rabbits which in turn will result in a lot more lay ups, with the mk 3 just enter the ferrets with the 2 collars and the receiver will pick them both up so it shouldnt be a problem Quote Link to post
The one 8,481
Totally up to you mate it's a gamble but so is life .A few guys i know put jills down and if they dont show put a hob with a collar in . Quote Link to post
stubby 175
I have the mk111 but not sure how you would use 2 collars, will have to get one and try. works the same, weather using one, two, three, four etc once your ferts are down, you'd only need to use the locator if one in particular hadent shown itself for a while, you'll be able to track them both, if one shows at a hole, box it up, and remember to place the box at least 16ft away from your search area, otherwise you'll pick up signals from that collar , then simple find the one that hasent shown, and start digging Quote Link to post
