doris 6
my lurcher has been diagnosed with IBD. he is two years old. I am trying to control the bouts of shits and vomitting with a bland diet as suggested by the vet, but still seems to bet bouts of it. We thought it was gluten related but the last 2-3 bouts have come out of the blue. Has any body else expearienced this in there running dog and how are they dealing with it? Merlin Hunter 0
I've got a dog with IBD- has your dog had a definite diagnosis of IBD from an endoscope? It's just unusual that your vet has said he has IBD and is trying to control it with diet only- I wouldn't have thought you could control it from the beginning just with diet- IBS maybe, but not IBD. In the last 2 years Murphy has only had one very short period off any medication. What foods have you tried? Whether it is IBD or IBS a general rule is to go to a different source of protein- tinned chappie is one of the best foods for dogs like this, then try a dried food with fish and rice or potatoe- avoiding chicken/turkey etc which is more commonly used. We use the PAH salmon and potatoe. Unfortunately one of the best foods to settle my dog down is the prescription diet Hills IBD- it's an absolute rip off price, but it works with his meds. As I said the vet needs to get a firm diagnosis but if it is IBD he'll definitely needs medications to help him on his way. Is he insured?
doris 6
defo IBD. . . . had endoscope and lymphocytic entiritus is diagnosed. I think this is the most common type of the small intestine. His normal diet would be barf. since he stated with the IBD in Sept he has gone on Royal canin sensitivity. . . . . and yes a rip off. I am keen to get him of drugs if possible. I have returned to barf which doesnt seem to have an adverse afect, but all of a sudden he'll have a bout, when he is off his food for 24 - 48 hrs then bounces back pretty quick and is ravenous. Can you advise what PAH is please? Yes we are insured , but now reached the limit. I dont think going to the vets any more is gonna help now. I now need see what settles him quickest and look at long term we can do for him. I have your PM and will folow up . . . . thx for your rsponse and any help is appreciated. Merlin Hunter 0
PAH = pets at home- they do a brand of food called Wainwrights- and Murphy is fine on the salmon and potatoe. My vet advised against barf and even meat from butchers because it isn't manufactured the content of fat/meat etc will obviously change slightly which can be enough to set them off again. I have also since read that dogs with any kind of digestion problems often do better on a more expensive food for the same reason i.e a cheaper brand of food will change the ingredients slightly depending on season to get value for money- a more expensive one will continue to buy the same ingredients regardless of cost. I'm surprised he hasn't had steroids- Murphy went on these straight away, and metronidazole as they tend to have lots of bacteria in the gut. I think it was my mate who sent you the pm- but I'll send the info again.
