The ferret isnt going to leave the rabbit because its wearing a muzzel, it will keep scratching at its back end until its dead. So its quicker if the ferret kills and moves on. But really, if you arent going to use a line etc, then get a locator Are you sure?????? A line can get caught up under ground or twisted around roots or even strangle a ferret. There is only one thing to use and that is a locator. lines have been used for years mate. I think once you get the hang of it, its a very useful thing to know. Fat-Ferret 857 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Share Posted January 23, 2009 Dont use a muzzle...Its not the way at all, those days are long gone, location location location Has anyone ever seen another tasty piece of kit called a Cope? a steel ring tha goes over the ferrets mouth and a pin pushes through the ring and through the ferrets teeth and back out the other side to hold it on....Brutal A lot of older men around my area talk all this muzzle and cope shite, and about sewing their lips or breaking their teeth out...apparently people still do this, I just hope I never come across anybody who has pulled a ferrets teeth or sewn its mouth Quote Link to post

jultaylor1972 2 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Share Posted January 23, 2009 Firstly, I would never muzzle a ferret because it is cruel and unnecessary and secondly, if your ferret is staying down for that length of time then there is a very good chance that it has killed underground - I dont imagine that it would drag the rabbit out for you In my limited experience that has never happened while I've been ferreting. When your ferret has killed underground then you will have to dig to get it out and there are two methods for this; either a liner ferret which will entail digging lots of holes and isn't always reliable or safe; or you could save up and buy a locator and collar which will go a long way to ensuring your ferret will be located (And the rabbit it has killed) but you will still have to dig at times to get your ferret out. I really dont mean to be rude, but for the sake of your ferret it sounds to me like you need to read a few books and get out with some experienced ferreters to learn the basics. We all have to start somewhere, but you need to learn to walk before you try and run. Good luck. Quote Link to post

pashley1988 0 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Share Posted January 23, 2009 well i dont think theres a need to reply now lol, i would never dream of using a muzzle after some of the things i have seen or heard of being bolted from rabbit warrens, get yourself a deben mk 3 locator and a couple of collars then get back out with your ferret, as for the time you should give them underground i reckon all depends on the size of the warren and how many ferrets your using, bigger warrens i tend to leave for half hour or so the smaller ones about 10-15 minutes, alot of the time though the ferret will show above ground and if you make your way over to him/her they tend to go back under Quote Link to post
Ginette 0 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Share Posted January 23, 2009 If you get a locator and start to worry its killed underground first locate the ferret but don't necessarily dig straight away. Leave it a few mins and check again, see if its moved on. Also you're worried that your ferret is gettin the rabbits and not you. If you dig out the ferret is there any reason you can't share the kill? Does your hob mutilate the rabbits beyond recognition? No. Quote Link to post
