SUPERSTITIONS

oooooo loads Undie!!!! :icon_redface:

Never put new shoes on the table.

The magpie thing.

The ladder thing.

The new moon through glass.

Bad luck to have a robin in the house.

Peacock feathers in the house are bad luck.

If you put on an item of clothing (accidentally) inside out it's good luck - to then change it would be bad!

If I'm hunting I like to have my lucky stockpin.

And I NEVER like to tempt fate.

Explain the new moon through glass thing and the magpie one, never heard of thoses before :icon_eek:

Ok dont know if this has been done before so here goes. Do you have any superstitions or wee rituals that you perform to ward of bad luck. Mine is not naming any new dog after what has gone before, I did this once and the dog was killed by a train. :icon_redface: So lets hear what you do to ward of bad luck :drink:

A Good dog should never be renamed.I think i was ther when your dog was hit by the train

You know the magpie thingy Undie!! Have to say "Good morning" and I nod my head or raise my hand to him.

I don't know where the new moon through glass comes from - my grandparents used to say it - they were originally from the north, so maybe it's a northern thing?? Or maybe not... But apparently it's bad luck to view a new moon through glass.

I forgot to say last night - I think I would wet myself if I broke a mirror. :o

Oh Yes!! And rooks!! Gives me the horrors when people on here go on about blasting their rookeries!! oooooooo.....doom on you!!!!! :D:blink:

As far as i can make out the practise of saluting a magpie is supposed to ward off bad luck. The solitary magpie is deemed to have had the bad luck of losing it's mate.......hence the One For Sorrow......Two For Joy etc. The salute is supposed to ward of this bad luck....as is saying Good Morning Mr Magpie How are you Today etc.

There are also other religious thoughts as well.........like the magpie was the only bird not on the Ark....or at Christs crucifixion etc. The black and white colouration is also said to be the good (white) and evil (black) and the colours worn when mourning.

The full magpie thing

1 for sorrow

2 for joy

3 for a girl and

4 for a boy

5 for silver

6 for gold

7 is a secret never to be told

8 is a wish and

9 is a kiss

10 is a bird you must not miss

You salute 1 magpie because you dont want sorrow, If you salute it its supposed to cancel the bad luck out. Ive also heard people saying ''Hello mr magpie hows your wife an family'' instead of saluting them.

I find if you shoot them it also cancels the bad luck!!!!
