IanB 0
I have and still do use a single ferret on many an occasion, on fairly large warrens, never had a problem mind you anything over or around 10-15 holes I'll put two or more as needed, depending on size.. Quote Link to post
sikastag_1 689
expecting a single ferret to bolt rabbits, is asking alot, you said you heard thumping, but no rabbits appeared, so they were down there, they wont bolt into the open and more danger unless they really need to, also having fur brought to the surface aint a definate kill underground, you'd expect to see blood i normally work a few ferrets but theres nothing wrong with working 1 ferret iv never had any trouble when iv done it especially in smaller holes 2 ferrets in a small hole normally result in a dig. I have done one 30 odd hole warren on two seperate occations this year working it with a single ferret. First time I had 9 out of it the second time I had 7 with a single jill. and not a single layup on either occasion. Yes there might have been rabbits left after each visit, but again, there might not have been. Too many ferrets in a small area cause layups...........But there again you dont need fieldcraft to use a spade. you talk a lot of sence but! Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
I'll only put more than one down if they are getting the run around. (It does not happen that often.) You cannot dig in three places at once. If it takes a stack of ferrets, rather than 2 or 3 at the most on the biggest of warrens, I'd be wondering about the ability of my ferrets. Quote Link to post
The one 8,482
Another thing with one ferret working a big burrow is the time factor i dont want to be stood in the cold and rain for ages when adding extra ferrets means i can be on my way Quote Link to post
hickso 0
Went out again for a couple of hours today took them BOTH, First warren the dog mark well both dogs mark was in some lovely brambles about 9 holes, we had to clear a bit out but not to hard work. We netted all the holes (missed a ducking bolt hole) up and put the ferret down the hole, 20sec's later bunny come flying out ferret not far behind. Picked him up and move to the other side of the warren and put him in, 1min later an explosion of earth with a rabbit runny from its life from the ferret still trying to catch it. Gutted about that bunny, when i had a look at the hole it came out of i was surprised the ferret could get out of it. Put both the ferret down again with no luck. Dogs didn't mark any others, we check some anyway na mind. Plenty in the cover so the dogs had great fun. Quote Link to post

John-B 4
Personally I prefer to use a inexperienced ferret on it's own down the hole first to let it get a run about and maybe bolt 1 or 2 before sending in reinforcements, most ferrets have different characteristics and ways of working and it's up to you to find that out but asking 1 ferret to work all day alone might be just a bit too much.
