Ferreting today

Recommended Posts

Went out ferreting today with a lad I meet on here. We started about 8.30 and went on a bit of land his dog been chasing bunnies about close to where I live and didn’t know about. Ferreted bits and bobs at the top of a steep hill where the dog had just chassed one up with no luck. We moved on to field I’ve been using this winter, which hold a good few burrows. The fields were very waterlogged from last nights rain so checkout the banking, the first set of holes the dog mark we netted which I thought was only 5 holes turned out to be 6. No rabbit bolted but heard plenty of bumping about, the ferret soon came out no fur on him at all put him back in a couple of times with no luck think there is a bolt hole we missed in the bush. Went for long walk around bits I had not been to yet this winter with still no luck. Plenty of sign about so checked some holes, which the dog didn’t mark just in case. So we moved on again to some small fields behind a petrol station. The dog was pushing a few from the bushes when the lad I went out with spotted one disappearing done a hole. We netted up, it was only 3 holes, which was a good thing because I left most of the nets in the car! Ferret went down for about 5 mins and then came to a net and drop a chuck of fur on the floor so guess him had killed in, the lad went to pick smudge up (the ferret) and he disappeared off back down. Two mins later rabbit blotted out and was clean netted thankfully

expecting a single ferret to bolt rabbits, is asking alot, you said you heard thumping, but no rabbits appeared, so they were down there, they wont bolt into the open and more danger unless they really need to, also having fur brought to the surface aint a definate kill underground, you'd expect to see blood

I have never heard so much rubbish in all my life!!!! I have done one 30 odd hole warren on two seperate occations this year working it with a single ferret. First time I had 9 out of it the second time I had 7 with a single jill. and not a single layup on either occasion. Yes there might have been rabbits left after each visit, but again, there might not have been. Too many ferrets in a small area cause layups...........But there again you dont need fieldcraft to use a spade.

Yeah its often hard to make them blot when put down by the dog i agree, but the comments on it being hard work for the hob, he has kill two(its his first season) and dragged them out one of them was out of a high 20s warren. He prob does leave one or two down, but not doing any ferreting at the mo as pest control just for the ferrets and me. Out tomorrow with the locator and his brother see if that gets better results.

thanks for comments all!

yes, I saw that too, I also saw that he got a rabbit from this warren, Ive left my advice for the member, you it seems want to prove your point over mine, lets leave it at that, and agree to disagree on the best amount of ferts to use

Not so long ago I put a jill down a three holer, after about five minutes I saw a rabbit run past the enterance hole closely followed by my jill, round and round they went, so I had to put in a second ferret to stop the rabbits taking the p*ss, that resulted in three bunnie's bolted, the next time I did the same three holer the jill killed under, a quick sweep with the locator put her at three and a half feet, it was only then that I realised how big the three holer was, if I heard a lot of thumping, I would put in another ferret, although Hickso had nothing from the six holer, he may just have turned the six hole blank into a win win for the ferrets if he had put another down, this is not having a go at the lad, its just what I would have done, go back with two ferrets and silence the thumpers, keep posting Hickso. ;)
