chinning rabbits

Recommended Posts

afternoon guys just got in from a trip out with the ferts(chaz and dave), we had 11 rabbits so not a bad result. when i was necking the rabbits thought it would be a lot easier to chin them(stop ripping my nets!) so could any one please tell me in detail how to do it please. done a search but not quite got the right answer.

i have seen it done on some clips and it looks very quick to do. cheers all

i just make a fist then karate chop :aikido: them behind the ears in the net find this very quick way of dispatching them :thumbs-up: as dont think necking them in the net works as you cannot stretch the rabbits neck fully to get the break but no problem if out of the net  but everyones got there own opinion

To wring a Rabbit's neck

It is a legal requirement that any quarry that is injured should be dispatched as quickly as possible with minimum suffering so here's two time honoured methods.

Method 1. Grasp Rabbit around the back of the head behind the ears with the thumb under the neck. With the free hand, take hold of both back legs.

You can now lift the Rabbit up and place the hand holding the back legs against your hip for support. Now pull down hard away from yourself, at the same time bending the Rabbit's head backwards.

You should feel a slight give in the neck. At this point the Rabbit is dead. It may twitch a bit but this is just nerves and there is no need to go on yanking at it.

Method 2. This is useful if you have a Rabbit stuck in a net. You can kill the Rabbit in the net and then remove it from the net without a struggle.

This time grasp the Rabbit round the neck with your thumb under the neck and the knuckle of the first finger against the base of the skull, where it joins the neck. Now, place the heel of your other hand under the Rabbit's chin and push up and back. Rabbit's dead.

Just a word of caution with this one, if you are in a bit of a hurry, e.g. more than one Rabbit to do, then just be careful that your hand is under its chin and not its front teeth. They are sharp !! I know !!

The important thing is to be quick and be positive !

Good hunting

I can remember when i was a laddie just out ferriting for the first time and the old guy i was out with showed me how to break the rabbits neck by pushing its chin back you can imagine the old bugger rolling about laughing when i tried it and the rabbits front teeth dug into the heel of my hand...I still bear the scar to this day so that i wont forget to watch the teeth when using that method :icon_redface:

Hold the rabbit IN FRONT of the ears, this makes the job a hell of alot easier and quicker. I think most people try it behind the ears and then give up as its alot harder. Ive never got the hang of chining very well, Get the odd screamer. I cant do it as consistant as stretching, so I stick to that.

Much easier and faster than stretching them, once you've mastered how to do it, and yes be careful, I've seen a grown man squeal like a baby :clapper:

Chinning them in the net certainly makes them easier to remove (being dead and all.. not wriggling) but its not always that simple, especially if he's balled up tight in the net. My prefered method is get the rabbit out the net first by bracing the front half of the coney between your legs, then pulling the two purse net rings appart to allow you to grad the back legs. The net can then be pulled off easliy and the neck broken quickly.

As for having the mesh of your nets big enough for the rabbit to fit his head through, not sure about that one... you'll lose a lot of three-qtr grown ones and your knots only have to slip a little for him to be away.
