Kane 2
There are probably a few chapters missing from the book you read [bANNED TEXT] Like the times he has bought in litters from outsiders and sold them(at inflated prices as his own lol strain). If you want a working terrier then you need to find one from an honest line of workers forget about fame and names generaly they will just add to the price tag.If its for showing then you will need to get one from parents that are doing well in the ring. But and quite a big but IMHO its very rarely the dog that gets judged its how famous or well known the person holding the leed is that wins the rossettes. Lot of truth there Kane but not what the lad asked . My perseption of a strain of dog is when it breeds true to type after several generations of breeding for a desired look, colour, weight, and temperament.Successive offspring must breed true.A blue print of these traits must be stamped on the D.N A. Line breeding to the same sire, put to his offspring and then to their offspring {if he lives that long}will start the process but it takes many generations to produce a strain. Most ,if not all strains need the out cross of fresh blood every once in a while if only to add hybred vigor, freshen immune systems and maybe add something desirable ie stronger jaw.The offspring will retain the line bred features plus the added strength after a couple of generations further down the line.It works the other way in that any bad features appearing ie bad coat can be rectified ,in theory. In answer to your second question -no better or worse than any other so called strain. Quote Link to post
Guest Top Chalker
Kane do u no that for a fact , or is it second hand information u have been told , the bit about byeing litters????? I dont show dogs at all , just work them , and if u read my post u will see i never mentioned showing, I am after astrong well bred lakeland dog , as for names and fame , i am a great beliver in breeding , not just the parants but all the dogs in the make up of the dog.... I tend to think people with good names for breeding , have them for a reason , not all dog men have the nack of breeding good stock, Fox d thanks for your reply , what i meant for the strain thing was, how long do u have to breed a certain type to call it your own , how many pups do u have to turn out to call the strain your own .... Iv had dogs for 30 plus years and never bred one yet , there are enough people breeding the type of dogs i use so i have never felt the need to breed of my dogs , just before people put 2 and 2 together and come up with 44 , thinking i am after calling some strain of dog after myself  Coursing is my game , but i have always had terriers , and now the coursing is getting hard work i will be using my terriers a lot more , I have 2 well bred bitches now , one has had some stick , the other lightly worked , but i have that much land to go at 2 just wont be enough, that is why i am after a well bred dog , if any one knows some one who breeds a good type of dog with a bit of history behind it i would be greatfull for som info .....as i have said i dont breed , but i dont jump in with both feet and bye the first thing that comes my way .......I tend to keep my dogs there whole lives, so i choose carfully to give myself the best chance of a first rate dog....... Squirrel_Basher 17,100
As I stated mate ,a strain is created when you are happy with what you are breeding and it breeds true. It does not matter how many pups you turn out ,they have to breed true. This is only possible by line breeding .It depends what you want in a terrier or any dog for that matter as it takes a few generations to install new factors .History of the root stock is of course very important .The rest is trial and error. If your stuct on getting a terrier from a big name then make sure you buy one from the man himself as there are a lot of terriers bred every year and passed off as such and such .Deal direct and visit the premises. Good luck . foxdropper. Quote Link to post
