Squirrel trapping

Recommended Posts

try a cage trap with penut butter but don't plonk it just anywhere, think about where the tree rat has been travelling back and forth. at the base of trees is a good bet. then once set cover it in foliage from around the place your trapping in. logs, branches and leaf litter works well. once you have caught your squirel put a sack around the opening of the trap and empty the squirrel into it, then wack it with a heavy log or such. for a cleaner kill point an air rifle throught the bars and give it a head or upper body shot. at point blank range it dosent matter where yo hit it as long as its upper body. ;)

if you can place your cage and be sure that no one will steal it as its in a secure garden area you dont need to cover the cage at all a squirrels natural greed and curiosity will be enough nearly all squirrels will go into a cage ;)

As Woodga says..........no need to cover the cage at all as the squirrel will enter the cage quite freely especially if it can see some tempting bait inside ;)

Can be worth hanging the maize ,nuts or seed bait in a little plasic bag just behind and above the plate if you are using a cage -trap. This tends to slow down theft by mice overnight and does'nt attract birds into the cage. A chunk of Snickers or similar rammed onto the plate edge is good. If using a Magnum tunnel impale a chunk of snickers between the trigger wires. Beware hedgehogs when using baited traps at ground level .There's nothing they won't eat . If in doubt put the traps off the ground on a pile of logs etc. Sometimes worth putting a brick or similar against the rear of a cage trap to stop a squirrel reaching through the bars for the bait Good luck
