Lurcher Dogs

Recommended Posts

Hi Dan,..

If i was you mate, i would keep some dogs for treeing and some dogs for running coyotes...that way you could have two dogs for coon and treeing, and then two dogs for running/killing coyotes...sounds like you could end up with a kennel full of dogs that do neither of the jobs you want them to do very well!?..

I would go down the selective route..use coyote dogs for coyotes, and treeing dogs for treeing...

Its easy for guys not been in the game long to try new breeding and such, but why reinvent the wheel?...i was lucky enough to get my first Stags from a top bloke who is a real hunter...some have to go through alot of shit before they get good dogs!...

Get yourself some good Stags mate..you wont regret it!...and good luck hunting!.. :good:

I totally agree with ya all, but tree dogs is my life for the most part. I have been coon hunting since I was a little shaver and just would never give up trying to breed better coon dogs. I pretty much just use the hard driven dogs that do both. This greyhound cross thing just was something my dad wanted to do cause we used to run field trial greyhounds back in the day. Pretty much a field trial greyhound races around in the woods for about a mile instead of on the track. There are a lot of creeks, brush, and trees to whip their way through and that is what we used to do a lot of and he kind of wanted some of these type dogs back cause he used to dump them on yotes and kill the hell out of em. I can remember doin it a lot when I was young and we sure did kill a lot of yotes. I don't disagree with youins at all just tree dogs are first and formost with me.

Hey Dan, nice to see you on here. Two types of hunting coyotes, using scent hounds (Walker, Trigg, July types) to run in rough cover can take hours but is fun, or coursing where staghounds run mostly by site and if they catch it is usually within 100 yards to a mile(maybe up to 2 miles but not often). There is a post some pages back in the lurcher section where Chilli posted some pics of my dogs at coyote catch"For Badger".

If you can call them in you can use the staghounds on any open area, but they have to have open room to get to the coyote. They will use their nose some, but nothing like a hound. But as far as "making" a fast coyote dog, ie. pitbull x greyhound, there is no need because the staghound has already been bred for it for decades if not longer, you just may not have met any in your part of the country. I have made bull crosses over the years and like them, but they are no better and not faster than the real deal coyote dog. Every guy that has visited from England I have hunted with is blown away by there speed, killing power, and "great feet". Even the best saluki x hare dogs here are usually blended with a percentage of staghound, not just greyhouond, as exampled by Dutch Salmon's blood, Delbert Hood's, Adalot's etc.(these guys have great hare dogs).

New guys always try to put something in there (Pit, airdale, great dane, etc., etc....) but when thay don't CATCH coyotes with the crosses, they either breed back to the proven blooded dogs or can the crosses and go straight back to the dogs that have been CULLED HARD for us for generations. If it worked it got to live and breed, if it didn't work...oh well. When crossed to scenthounds, very few, if any i have seen were fast enough to catch on the runup and tough enough to kill, or had good enough noses to run coyotes like a foxhound. Some strains of staghounds have enough nose to run some through CRP grass and such, but not cross country runs like a pack of Triggs.

just my opinion and experiences there, cause there are a lot of great hunters out west here I can't hold a candle to.

if i can help or you would like to go hunt, get ahold of me(especially if you have better than 20/20 vision lol)
