Winchester sub X bad, Eley good

Recommended Posts

Magtechs very hit and miss quality wise. Not very uncommon for them to either misfire or go off like a high velocity. One batch can be excellent and another can be awful.

accuracy is very suspect aswell

Fair do guys and historically I agree, and I still make no suggestion these are the greatest, but are your experiences recent, these have improved a lot, and yes, you get the odd one that goes sonic and I recall one misfire, but that is in thousands and most other makes are known to do this as well from time to time. I have had plenty of Eley .22LR misfire down the club, but that too is in thousands of rounds!

Just a suggestion to anyone into hunting, simply try a box of 40g HP subs and see what you think, they hit hard and peel back a treat!!

I am currently about 850 rounds through a lot of 1000 and have lost count of the amount of misfires and wild fliers.

The last batch i had wasn't so bad, but i think i'll be sticking to winchesters from now on!

Well...you have either been unlucky, or I have been lucky, probably used 3-4000 of these and had 1 misfire (definately 2 or 3 that have gone sonic), and first time my lad used these he grouped them in 1" (10 shot) without any problem at 50 yards!! (and wound me up about how bad he was shooting) Funny old world!!

OK:

I have a SAKO Finnfire Varmint, cut down to 17" with a SAK Moderator, I have used Winchester Subs for over 15 years now, though to be honest it's the ones that that my favoured shop usually keeps (Martin Elworthy's in Cornwall).

I have found them exceptionally good, 1/2" groups at a lasered 75 yards (off a bipod) in ideal conditions.

So I'm not about to change, however I have tried Eleys and RWS, both of which are very close to the Winny's.

In the 'old' days (C.1970's, I know I am an 'Old T*at'). RWS were king, they had nickel plated cases, and in those days I used an Anschutz 10 shot Semi, these shot superbly and killed hundreds of rabbits for me, but the current stuff is now brass and unplated and whilst ok it's only 'ok'.

I think the rifle is probably the key, my SAKO is the 'dogs' the trigger is just magic, and with a decent scope (Leupold VX3 2.5>14x50 LRT, Varmint Ret) you can't miss at under a 100.

So keep at it, YOU are the variable, .22 rimfire is the most used cartridge in the world, and within it's limits its probably

the best alround cartridge available.
