Guest world.hunters
I have always been told merle to merle is a no go when it comes to breeding dogs but also had people tell me that they have had litters from merle to merle with no problem as long both dogs dont have blue eyes, i have been talking to someone on here just lately aswell and they also told me that "you can do merle to merle long as they as not mainly white and both well coloured merles, its white thats the weak colour,ok on one but not both,,2 blue eyes is not good either" whats other peoples views on this subject. Guest reload
Exactly Giro, Its best to be cautious and know the linage of the dogs used. Yes they can all be born fine, but there is a risk, what you have to ask yourself is, are you happy to take the risk to the pups being born deformed or deaf etc. Quote Link to post
Guest night time my time
going to quickly have my say before i go,was looking forward to the beach, beautifull day an all, right its fine to breed merle to merle if both sire and dam are prodomiately fully coloured merles.you run the risk of blind deaf dogs, skin conplaints etc, when you stast breeding 2 prodomenatly white dogs together, merle is in itself a fault whatever colour it is,also a brown dog bred from one merle parant does carry the gene but unless bred to a merle dog agian is unlikely to ever throw a merle pup, bloody suns gone in now, :realmad: Quote Link to post
Guest world.hunters
well if collies and collie x all have the gene breeding any collie x or collie to another collie x or collie is that not the same "risk" w.h Quote Link to post

doga 50
dont think id want to run that risk whats the point in chancing it,you wouldnt know if deaf or blind pups were in a litter for weeks, why put your dog and your self through that, just take the hole merle to merle thing as gospal choose a solid colourd animal in the mating. Guest reload
well if collies and collie x all have the gene breeding any collie x or collie to another collie x or collie is that not the same "risk" w.h Find some info via Border collie breeders, or other breeds which carry the merle gene thats what I have done. You will find many DONT breed merle to merle, as its a risk. Theirs plenty of info about to be had. Personally I would be careful and do it right. Edited January 21, 2009 by reload Quote Link to post

I bred mine got 5 massive strong healthy pups look at these crackers with blue eyes breeding vertually any 2 white dogs together holds that risk, you only have to look a dalmations and the faults they carry these days, look through your dogs coat, its more the pink skin your looking for under the white hair, there is the real weakness, Quote Link to post

And i bred my bitch to a solid coloured dog.. but with so many collies in any line that merle gene is everywhere.. My pups have been vet checked no health problem at all... Quote Link to post
