jonathan 0
I would have thought a lightweight border collie would exel behind a long net as most of thier comands used for sheep work are directional such as away to me or get out by right or left most of ours will run out the length of the field without any sheep in it,which would scare the rabbits shitless, then lay down and stay,if the dogs getting to close to the net.Would like to work sheep with a dog that has been hunted regular on rabbits though ,they much prefer rabbit lot more fun and less grumpy. Good thread my collie likes rabbit work better then the sheep. and its my dog that we are thinking of trying him at night on sheep commands. e.g run the long net out and send him around the field to work it back towards the net To save time walking to the other side Quote Link to post
colliejohn 840
Interesting thread, collies are very underated by alot of folk, they are the most versatile of any breed of dog, my old pal Typp Ratcher, use to work his fell collies, mooching, ferreting , and lamping, with great success, the right type of collie as to be used though, not the cobby heavy lowland types, but the leggy racey lightboned types that are worked in the northern areas of England, and Scotland, if i was to work a straight collie for rabbiting these would be the type i would go for, and i would bring it up the same way as i do with a lurcher. i,m a great fan of collies, and collie saturated lurchers as i own a reverse threequarter collie greyhound bitch, which has served me well over the years, both on rabbit, and hares, both daytime, and on the lamp, my young bitch is out of my old reverse threequarter, and she is heavily collie saturated, she is showing alot of promise, and i will be more than happy if she turns out like my old bitch. i,m not a fan of current lurcher trends, especially outcrossing collie blooded types with saluki types, to me it,s diluting all the good traits out of the collie side, a collie as plenty of stamina, and other good traits, so why dilute them. regards collie john.
