ferreterni 29
I'm not a local, I have a small bit of ground but want to do more work. Terrier and ferret, Having to sell lurcher due to lack of work for her. Thought I'd take a chance and see if anyone knows anywhere or if anyone would need a hand for beating or donkey work with spade etc. Worth a shot. Quote Link to post

tdavepat 8
Does anyone know of any ferret, terrier and lurcher ground in this area? or need a spare pair of hands any days? I'm from up on the coast but would travel down past your area quite often for a nights lamping. I had to rehome my ferrets as I wasn't giving them enough work, but I would still lamp with my 2 whippets most nights. Rabbits are thin on the ground up here so decent permission is precious and jealously guarded. Plenty of rabbits (and other stuff) down your way and a bit beyond though. Try PM'ing Milliken off here, he has a whole rake of permission near you. He runs a couple of whippets but does a bit of terrier groundwork at weekends. Dave Quote Link to post
ferreterni 29
I know it's not easy getting ground. I am looking a lot more to learn terrier work as I don't really want to head into it with only a book knowledge and no experience. I don't want to mess any one elses ground up and am prepared to have a wait and hard time getting there. Just thought that it couldn't hurt to ask. Have all my own ferreting gear and dogs. But would be happy to just get out with more workers, and not use my dogs. My wee jrt is used for ferreting. Lurcher is taking rabbits and odd pheasant, run a couple foxes but no luck yet. Both ok with sheep too. The gun shop is still there but I rarely use it as I make my own nets and is easier to buy rest off computer. I don't drive either which really limits me to very local area. Have no great expectations from this post, but worth a try. Even if someone remembers in the future that there is a ferreter local to a farmer and passes it on. It's all just a waiting game, and showing the right people at the right time that I am trustworthy. Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
Pity you couldnt get down here...I have just got a new ground as well, goverment turf, 150 acres, and only me! I had to get insured, But ony £22 so not bad Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
Why dont you put a vermin control notice in any agricultural suppliers or Crawfords, and even ask the man in there, he's bound to know a lot of people, maybe even join the gun club and that way you will get to know people who know people, It took me ages to get onto the first bit of ground I had, It was living with rabbits and I couldnt go in!, I went down at 8.00 for 4 saturday mornings in a row and stopped tractors passing and asked them until eventually I got the owners address and then the week after I got him, He eventually let me in but with a lot of rules, but then he asked me to visit his brothers ground further away & that was the hook up for the government ground, All stemmed from chasing tractors! Make it your goal for as long as it takes to talk to every farmer and hunter and landowner and anybody you can and your bound to hit something sooner or later Quote Link to post
ferreterni 29
Was talking too man about my lurcher, and he pointed me in direction of a farmer a mile away. Said he happy for people to go for foxes as is a sheep farmer, so am asking in the next day or too. Would get me a lot of groundbetween here and the town. Was always unsure how to ask cos no one knows me round here. How that hob doing for you? Jill coming on good here. Quote Link to post
ferreterni 29
not bad for insurance. Am thinking of getting guns too, easy to get into clay shooting. Need to look into it because I think it will be easier to use an o/u to get permit using clays as reason for gun. But it's a s/s I plan to get. farmers round here are pretty decent, and I think if I can fall in with one then doors will open everywhere, just getting nerve up to ask. They can only say no I suppose. Quote Link to post

Just go and ask him, He will probably be glad of it, thats what I done, I only moved to where Im at not long ago, Its not easy when you dont know anybody But I was f*** If I wasnt getting out, So I just asked everybody I could! When you get in with that first farmer, ask him about anybody he might know, he will maybe put you onto someone else....keep at it! Quote Link to post

I would speak to Crawfords, tell him your after a Gun but you have no land owners permission and could he help you out, Id say if your taking a gun or two from him he will soon set you in the direction of a farmer or two, And as you say, once you get in with one, thats it..you'll end up with more than you need Hob coming on well, he dragged another rabbit out the day after boxing day, He seems happy enough with four jills for company! And he can eat, f*** but he can eat, Ive seen dogs eat less, He's not fat or overweight, but he enjoys his dinner! And the locator collar only goes to the first hole, He a lot bigger than when I brought him down a few months ago, good ferret though all round and very quiet, my youngest jill climbs on him and trys her best to start him messing and fighting but he has none of it! tdavepat 8
All good advice mate. I started late and worked away out the country for the past 25 years. When I came home and fulfilled my long awaited wish for running dogs, I also didn't know a soul. I spoke to every tractor driver and famer I met. I walked every field for miles around in my search for signs of rabbits, mostly in vain I must add. it took me over a year of field walking my dogs with and without the lamp to find little pockets of rabbits (and their cousins). I couldn't begin to count the amount of nights I have come home after 3 hours without spotting a sausage. But I never gave up hope and I knew that one night we would strike lucky. I now have a few scattered permissions, good enough for between 3-6 rabbits per night. With two decent dogs and an air rifle I have to make sure they all earn their snap, but its still a juggling act. Thats why i have to come down every so often past your stomping ground to exercise the dogs and keep them tuned in. Milliken on here runs a working whippet club, with whippet and lurcher lure coursing and straight racing nearly every month during off season. It might not be everybody's cup of tea but it might help you to get talking to people with good permission, and there are a few. Try out towards Bellaghy or Castledawson. Its been teeming with rabbits every time I go through. I know the soil is good and a lot of the warrens are accessible and decent enough for ferreting. Good luck in your search, i personally think you are located in one of the best areas in the country for hunting. Dave Edited January 24, 2009 by tdavepat Quote Link to post
