Giro 2,648
Its open forum discuse away throw a few ideas about i dont know everything about dogs. I had thought about putting a whippet over my pat its a great hunter takes rabbits and birds in cover and flushes well for the big dogs.. But thought i would gain little if anything from the breading, pups will be hard to find homes for its a limited market. some folk might favour your idea i dont totally dismiss it,tis your dog fella if you want to do go for it. Guest Countryboyo
If you wanted to cross it with a terrier you would probably be better off goung for a taller leggier terrier than the border like an irish or beddie. What do you want it to hunt may I ask? Quote Link to post
cornishblackjack 0
Rabbits!!!!well i have thought of a bellighton cross whippet but i must say that my bitch is quit leggy anyway she is not on the pedigree line..farm bred!!!! Guest Countryboyo
Throw a beddie or an Irish terrier over her and dont mind your molly coddling around with a border for the love and honour of god! You might as well be pi$$ing against a huricane with a border whippet. Quote Link to post
Guest fence_hopper
I thought the deffition of a lurcher was a sight hound cross. If u can cross with terriers such as bull, irish, bellighton, why then cudnt you cross with a border terrier..why wud this make such a bad cross????????? alright mate i've never heard of a bellighton what are they hound or terrier are they any good Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
The jrt x whippet i put up before was an accidental mating when doga's working jrt got over his whippet. We got one because Amy liked the sound of them and its turned out quite well. Doga kept one of the pups and weejohn has another, they are all turning into respectable rabbit dogs as far as I know. Ours works on the lamp but dosent often get out as my lurcher bitch is better but he does excel at ferreting and has become an important part of my team. Would a whippet be better? I've no idea as i've never owned one so maybe or maybe not! Im not sure if i would want to try the whippet over a terrier bitch as my understanding is that pups tend to throw more to the mother. Im certainly no expert as I've never bred a dog in my life so no doubt I will be corrected if im wrong Quote Link to post
whin 463
ye there wirriers localy , saw them for ratting and close work for rabbits in bushes under sheds goerge hogg keeps them he wrote pratical pest control years ago he uses them for marking in awkward places ie nuclear powerstations , estates were he does rabbit control now they wouldnt suit me but they do ajob for him ,saw them work and they are fine at what they do just a big fast terreir, but no were a good allround lurcher , but when you go on estatesa wee terreir lurcher does not look like catching a roe or hare so thats the reason when you have seen abit then make asumptions he has aborder or he had aborder whippet as the whippet has not got the jacket for some of his work not exiting just council work and contract work and terreirs are good marking dogs hebnce the breeding , Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,425
as hippychick said nowt new there, seen adverts from 100 year ago in exchange and mart with terrier crosses. some might even say that a lakie/patt or border would be better than most of the bedlington rubbish thats around. cornishblackjack 0
I understand this may not be a good cross but im asking for advice thats all.she will probably go to a border stud dog..Still does anyone knw what may come from this cross i understand that there will be wastage thou!!.. mate i know someone with the cross, almost useless, barked like fu*k, thats why people use the beddy, it doesnt bark, you dont want a sighthound that wastes its breath, so why breed it to a dog that has been bred to bark? its bloody stupid is what it is, if you knew anything about dogs you wouldnt consider it and you wouldnt have to ask, go and buy a book, read it. and then DON'T cross a border terrier to a whippet. jesus.  like i said im only asking..i am only going by what i see in my dog i knw shes not pure because she was farm bred. she dosent bark compared to other terriers iv come across and she is longer in the leg then your pure border terrier. At the end of the day its a dicussion and everyone to there own. im not saying i wud go ahead with the cross. jst was intersted to see if anyone out there may have come across or seen this type of cross if any!!! fielder 18
As long as the border and the whippet are proven workers then there is no reason why the pups would not make useful ferreting and bushing dogs. Instead of just knocking someone for asking a genuine question, why not give a reasoned answer? Quote Link to post
