John-B 4
Come on lads, no-one else has been out, give us some entertainment! Well!!! We have just got in, had a bit of a mooch round one farm Rabbits galore mostly above ground in open fields, started off with a few small sets that the farmer wanted us to look at in one of his sheep fileds but nobody home and rabbits running down the hills alongside the walls, so went down to another set with about 5 holes, looked promising ferrets went down and were down a while, eventually come out wearing furry slippers so something down there, time to send in the big hob and mark it for us with the collar on as we always do and after a 18" did out comes rabbit number 1 in a stop ender, moved further down the bank again trying sets between 3 and 5 holes nobody home though but rabbits allover the fields. So we went down the bottom of the filed next to the river to be met with a single set of about 85-90 holes and both our dogs going mad and marking very well we tried a few smaller sets around them but nobody home again! Time for desperate measures! we had 68 nets i think and we don't have any long nets but they will be next on the list, so we netted up what we could using every net we had and in went the ferrets and all hell broke loose, rabbits flying out from everywhere mainly the holes that didn't have nets on though Grrr!!!!!!!!!! we got 5 out of them though and 3 ran into another set next to a wall, the other were bolting back up the fields, so i was taking the nets off the huge set and Col went to try and get the rabbits out of the hole we had seen them going down, Col netted up and in went the ferret. within a minute 1 bolted and about 5 seconds later another bolted from another hole at the other side of the set i ran over to take one from him so we got them out the nets and Col was putting a net back on the hole one had just come from, just about to lay the net over the hole and the third rabbit nearly hit him in the face, it missed the net but he grabbed it, he dropped it and caught it again, it jumped out of his hands up into the air then he caught it again and pinned it on the ground and dispatched it was very very funny to watch him juggling a rabbit and it not get away. By this time we had 9 rabbits in the bag and decided to call it a day as we had 2 other farms to go to so we can get our permission forms signed up the hill on the way back up to the van was really steep and we stopped next to a 5 hole set for a breather so we thought we would ferret it to try and make it 10 for the day, so we netted up and in went my small young Jill and she was down a while very strange for her so we knew she was onto something, no sign of her and no collar on her so again in went the big hob and he chased the jill out who had furry slippers on again so rabbit down hole, Big hob with collar pinpointed where the rabbit was and another 16-18" dig and there was the rabbit. as col pulled it out another one was poking it's head out the tube so that was grabbed and took us up to 11 for the day,we went back to the van and sorted gear out Col put the kettle on and we had a brew and something to eat. not a bad day as we started quite late, we didn't know the land so we had a quick walk round first but we need to spend quite some time on there and give it a good recce as there is rabbits allover the place but mainly above ground in tufts of grass, Col's lurcher "sally" had a run at a few but she's almost 13 so a little slow now, even my fatty flat coated retriever had a run at a few but he has no chance LOL, we went up to one of our other permissions and dropped off permission forms then went to our 3rd permission and the farmer showed us his boundaries and where the rabbits are, his land is bloody huge with rabbits galore so we have plenty to go at, we just need to come up with a plan now as to how we are going to work them in the future and try to get hold of some long nets and maybe a few new dogs. Really enjoyed it as it is our first Errrrrrm Legal permissions and i'm off work now until monday so no doubt we will be having a go on one of the 3 farms for more action. Pictures will follow as Col has them on his phone Quote Link to post
