I don't poach mate and got my own permission, don't see why dogs should be shot though, it's not their fault, it's the poacher who took them there in the first place, anyway i'm fairly new here and not getting into any arguments so i'll leave my opinions at that

Don't get me wrong mate, you seem like a good bloke and i'm not trying to start handbags :victory: Its the dogs that run the risk of paying the ultimate price and i wholeheartedly agree that its a terrible shame if someones dogs get shot.

I been quite lucky in that i grew up in an area where permission wasn't hard to come by (west sussex) but appreciate the fraustration. I'm in Bristol now and i'm forever longingly looking at neighbouring fields as getting perm round here is a right fecker and i have to travel quite far as i don't want to risk my FAC :icon_eek: All the best.

is it worth running the risk of getting caught and losing a good dog/ferrets for the sake of a few rabbits?? i dont think so. there is a tiny minority who will take a lot of un nececarry risks and give this sport a bad name for the sake of a hare ,deer, ect.most of it is money related...whos dog is faster, which dog can turn a hare the most, now many deer the said dog can take in one night.is it worth all the hassle.i would rather go out and find my own permission,be able to work my dogs freely and be able to show my catches freely and not have to run the risk of every land owner/farmer/keeper in the land ,keeping an eye open for me.sooner or later you are going to get caught,no matter how cunning or clever you may be

I was brought up rabbiting in places were we shouldn't really be, but they way some people talk on here, you'd think that every square inch of this land was patrolled by a gamekeeper.

There's more to rabbiting than game shoots...

im not calling or saying youre a wrong un for doing it mate, ive poached and on the odd occasion still do.if its to put food on the table ,all well and good , i just cant understand why people would play dumb to the fact or come on forums twisting their faces once they get caught .theyre obviously on that land for a reason, even more so if theyre walking about with ferrets and a dog.they put walls and fences up for a reason, you know that as well as i do,the same reason keepers are hired,to look after stock and keep us lot out, hence the reason i say its there own fault if they get caught,i wouldnt expect no sympathy if i got caught and my animals got took/shot,at the end of the day thats my problem,i made the decision to go on the land i have to face the consequences for my actions

they put walls and fences up for a reason

The reason they put up walls and fences is to keep livestock in, not people out.

if you were to walk through my gate at my home, which is surrounded by a wall and fences, and you did not have my permission or any legal reason to be there could i not have you done if i wanted to for trespass??

not realy unless you had padlocks mate as you maybe got lost or never new you had to have permision, in a garden its diffrent from a hundred acre feild with no wt worth stealing mate, a part from a few rabbits , the walls are there and barb wire to keep livestock in not realy tresspasers, look at the fens hardly a fence in some areas as its all arable ,or better still the hill country in scotland thousands of acres to walk and no body to realy bother you ,i live on afarm and no the laws abit as i get lost on a nite and well it takes 2 hours to get back some nites sweating and furry with a beastie a lamp up hill, i wa driving a stubble one day chaseing hares farmer was goingbon i never had game he says your chasieng hares with dog i says quickly not my dog mate its the guy over there on the public [bANNED TEXT] of way we have been looking all morning for it he couldnt do a thing he did phone the law but i told them etc a story and well they said watch the retire d greyhound i says no problem and that was that colg

Fenced, walled, whatever there is no trespass law in England. If someone damaged your property by trespass thats a different matter.

I think this argument is about how people taking a few rabbits are treated by gamekeepers.Back in Victorian times peasants may have been thrashed, there dogs shot and arrested, but this is 2009.I dont poach and my son doesn't either, but he has been threatened by a keeper on a shoot bordering his permission after the dog followed a rabbit through a hedge. Some keepers seem to think this is the 1800's and try to throw there weight about when a simple explanation would suffice.Where my family are concerned i dont make idle threats, should a keeper threaten or hurt one of mine there will be serious repercussions.

I have lots of permission and i get annoyed when i catch kids with airguns wandering about, but i try to explain things not act the c*nt and throw my weight about.Like someone already said, you'd need to be prepared for anything or completely stupid to be making enemies where i live.

im not sure if thats aimed at me mate but if it is im not here crying about getting caught poaching, far from it,if i get caught its my fault, and if i get a kicking from a few keepers then so be it,and after that i wouldnt even hold a grudge.barn burnin, destroying pens/propertynot really called for if im in the wrong.

  • 1 month later...

It always makes me laugh when lads poach and say they ed kill anyone that stops them etc etc Then years later when they've grown up and got their own permission and the catch lads poaching their ground and they go ape shit about it ,going kill them etc etc To me it double standards and is bullshit bill88 you say your annoyed when you catch lad's wandering around YOUR permission well ,can you imagine how annoyed you would be if your job and house, kids future depended on it ?

ps i know we were only talking about rabbit here but you get my drift

I think that if a gamekeeper/farmer catches you on his/her land/shoo then they can ask for your name and address and a gamekeeper can confiscate all of your equipment. A clever farmer/gamekeeper will take all of your stuff because he/she know you will not go to the police because you sholdent have been there in the first place.
