Tyla 3,179
As above, I've been thinking of getting one as neither of the lurchers is all that good in thick cover. I'd like something small enough to work the brambles and flush to the lurchers. What do you recommend? Thanks Quote Link to post

Tyla 3,179
Cheers guys, how would you enter them? Both the dogs hunt up all the time when out walking and i expect a new one would follow suit but hopefully get in places where they cant/wont. Obviously obedience and retrieve but what else goes into the training to bush? Quote Link to post
Guest whitser
if you get a springer x beagle or terrier it'll be harder to stop them hunting cover then to start them. Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
if you get a springer x beagle or terrier it'll be harder to stop them hunting cover then to start them. I've been lucky enough to take out a mates terrier x springer x beagle team of late whilst he's been laid up in Hospital. Seen these dogs work over the past 15 years but it's been the first time i've hunted them. Your dead right Whitser, once out, stopping 'em is a nightmare, especially as they wern't used to my commands! Fantastic dogs for the job, almost machine like to their work and tough as feck if you are looking for a bushing type dog i'd recommend this type highly. Quote Link to post

Guest Countryboyo
I use JRT (seen here) for bit of bushing and I also use a staffy. I sometimes use the JRT to drive up big rabbits to my uncles track greys when needs be. The staffy Hates greyhounds with a passion so I cant take her out with them. Still she loves to plough through rushes and brush and has a great nose. Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
I keep spaniels and a spaniel cross. And will be adding beagle cross to my pack at some point... Cocker/patterdale... excellent hunting bitch, opens up on scent, cant fault her, and a totally different animal to either parent, more like a wee hound. Cocker.. endless stamina, flat out all day, dog is a machine.... This springer has NEVER turned his nose up at even the thickest cover, ploughs through with determination... now retired unfortunatly. Tyla 3,179
Some cracking dogs, so it sems a mix of terrier, spaniel and beagle is the favorite. I have been offered a black and tan bitch puppy, both sire and dam are jack russel based, rough coated leggy terrier crosses and although they are not worked they live at a livery yard and kill plenty of rats and rabbits. Im off to have a look at the weekend. Edited January 15, 2009 by Tyla Quote Link to post
Malt 379
We use small our small terriers, and a Beddy/Whippet. We'll have a springer pup ready by next season to add a bit of variety, and I've got another Beddy/Whippet pup that's coming on. Quote Link to post
