was talking this over with a mate on the blower last night , and we come to the conclusion that unless you started the breeding process yourself? do you REALLY no whats in your dog? as theirs that many lies been told to sell dogs on and so and so and the list in endless , dogs been sold left right and centre , false breeding , false ages - anything been said to sell them .

most lurchers are all greyhound/whippet based * sighthound* as we all know , so whatever the other is wether it be terrier blood or hurding blood * collie* and so on ,

you would then need the pure breed such as a collie , so we then obviously put the pure breeds together i.e grey to collie , we end up with the 1st cross collie grey , but if you do that yourself you KNOW that your going to end up with the 1st cross , but if you was to buy the same from say the local paper , at 4 months old? do you really know thats what your buying

a * LINE* obviously will take time , to get up and going , years in fact , by time you have selected parents, proved their working abilty , then suitable studs , but atleast you will be certain whats in your lurcher , as you could buy a dog of 12 months old , beleiving it to be a saluki grey / whippet grey , but really nowhere near that breeding , then yo line it with something else , and without you realising it , your just creating more and more mongrals , but if you bred your own 1st cross / 3/4 bred and so on , to the a stud of also what your for sure is what it is , then you get what you want , not just a total mix that could throw in any direction of the many of breeds which COULD be in their ,

well post/rant over :tongue2:

good geunine post that mate.

a freind went to wales to buy 2 lurchers greyhound bullcross the owner told her straight cross nice big healthy pups so she got 2 now at 8 months old they look like labradores . so i get what your saying when you buy a dog you can only take the owners word for the cross

GOOD POST... heres one for instance, went to buy a pup only last week when i got there and had a chat to the person he genuinley thought he had used a frst cross bull greyhound on his deerhound bitch.. when i asked who owned and the name of sire it came to light that the dog he used was a dog that i once owned . he wasnt a frst cross,i know this as i bred him. so the pups that have been sold the new owners think that the breeding is what the breeder thought they where.

exactly where i was coming from , now them pups WILL be lined eventually to something else , with others not knowing , then again , some lurchers with breeding * unknown* are top quality , my mate as one with unknown breeding and will do anything you ask of it , but the point raised was , do we really know?

all opinions welcome , :tongue2:

this is one of the reasons why there is so many dogs about that just dont come up to the mark ,and being bred from as well so people can get some of their money back ,just a never ending circle of rubbish being brought into the field .if you dont do your home work then it is your fault ,but the blame seems to always be on the dog .

my mate wanted a lurcher and his mum said he could have a terrier for various reasons (smaller, less mad, ect) anyway out of the paper he saw *litter of terrier pups jrt* so he thaght ahh nice one they were £50 each he went and got one and it grew into a rather nice looking whippety thing about 20" that caght rabbits all day he was happy and his mum was...

funny little story but it shows people lie...

i bought a dog off someone on here nye on 2 years ago now. id advertised for a fox taking dog with some bull in it as a preference. So we drove from Devon to Stafford to get the bitch which he told me was a bull/grey x whippet.

As we were given her papers we rung the breeder, turns out she's Whippet // staff(not bull)/grey x Saluki/grey.

luckily enough she turned out good after a few months of basic training and now has a good reputation has a here retrieval bitch where i live.

Well unless you know the person your buying from or breed yourself its all in the lap of the gods. Besides unless you want a particular x ie 1/2 x 1/2 or a 3/4 doe's it really matter?. Folk have argued long and weary in here about the importance of breeding from worker to worker but unless you know exactly whats in the pot it's hit and miss. I suppose thats why Hancock has cornered the market in collie x's. Maybe someone will do the same with other x's
