The Saluki I took on that has been roaming for 9mths has now been here for 4mth. When roaming she was getting left, pkts of beef, chub meat, chews tins of tuna- on different days. Since we've had her shes been wormed (none found) vax'd, frontlined & microchipped. She should have been spayed a fortnight ago but had fluid in her teats so vet said to wait another couple of weeks.

But she's still quite ribby & doesnt seem to be putting any weight on. I stopped all the pkts of ham/beef & chub within 2 weeks of getting her. She's on BETA Sensitive, with chappie & meat with jelly, normally with any chicken, meat that is left from tea. She's a finnicky eater though & at first she was doing ok, now she seams to have lost a bit of weight. She eats part of her tea then goes & eats my older dogs diet food.

What's the best thing to bulk her up a bit & get a few pounds on her so you cant see all her ribs. She's still exercised on flexi lead-purely because she switches off & goes to leg it across open fields.

She's not running enough to be burning off all the goodness in the food

Would appreciate some advice as not had running dog before. My alsation grey is just about right, nice & healthy shiny coat & cant see his ribs sticking out.

Salukis do tend to need more carbohydrate than most Western orientated dogs, but if she is a finicky eater I'd get her off the complete 'food' you have her on. Beta: rubbish IMO. Chappie: just fish and rice and water. Ditto. Like has already been said: get her on raw breast of lamb, chicken, beef mince: and it wouldn't hurt to give her rice and pasta too. Don't try to feed all at the same meal. Breast of lamb to keep her occupied: make sure she is in a quiet place on her own to eat where other dogs and people can't see/disturb her. Feed chicken the same way: wings and carcases. Pasta and rice with a bit of gravy and scrambled eggs, or tins of pilchards or tuna.

Salukis shouldn't carry any surplus weight anyway, and if she's not getting the exercise she probably won't want to eat much: my Saluki types only eat what they need for their current energy requirements: it they don't do a lot of running they don't eat much at all.

Plus: if the dog isn't very fit she won't have much muscle which is mainly what bulks a dog of this sort out: there's little or no subcutaneous fat to cover the bones if there's no muscle.

Thanks, she does also get chappie biscuits & meat- she tends to eat the alsation/greys food once she's had a bit of her own. Give her plain rice & pasta but not every day. Havent been giving her raw meat, she has cooked fish just plain.

The problem I have is until I can loan/rent a completely secure paddock I havent let her off lead yet. Her recall even on the flexi or lunge line is dire. She will interact with both dogs & chase Tigs for about 5 mins then she's bored & wants something else to do, she then terrorises my older dog for 5 mins or she 'fixes' on something in the distance & legs it up the field- at these times she completely ignores any calling or whistles. I think this is how she ended up as a stray to start with.

I've tried to read up on them & have read that they will only eat what they are burning off & now she is not lving wild she is not having to hunt for food so her muscle has reduced.

Definately need to up her weight at least by a couple of pound I'd say looking at others on here. She has gone quite ribby & dont want her to end up with problems later on for not taking preventative action now, she's not 2 yet. So will get on with shopping & cooking. She does get fed twice a day anyway & will eat up if it's got grated cheese in it. She also seems happier to eat if I put it on floor & not in her dish. Strange flipping creatures these Salukis, but I'll get there. Would be happier if I could let her off lead but that's something else that needs a bit more work.

if the dog was feral try it on the pies and pasties diet that piles wieght on , it easy to get out of date pies and pasties most shops - butchers are glad to get shot of them , as for the recall try an electric collar on the lung line when the dog gets used to a little zap he may just come around , an e collar will focus the attention better than something in the distance thats for sure

Fat has around twice the calories as protein or carbs so you can increase calories without increasing meal size if you reduce some carbs and increase the fats ie butchers waste has a lot and in general lamb or beef will give a lot of fat (on average 60% calories from fat within the meat and 40% from protein) + a little oil on the feed, as mentioned above, it will increase the total calories without increasing meal size. If the dog is not doing a lot then a reduction in carb intake will not hurt plus a little extra protein will help build muscle. Though at the end of the day it doesn't matter two much as long as it's getting more calories in than it is burning up and getting adequate fat, protein & carbs it will put on weight.
