Hello mate, Here,s one of mine, linseed oil finish, nothing else, but there is a knack to it, only use the tip of your finger with the tiniest amount and work it in well, leave to dry for about four hours then pick the stock up with both hands and rub it all over, (sounds mad but trust me) it should fill like there,s hardly any oil on it, then leave it over night, I done mine for about five days but on some hot days I did manage to get a couple of coats on, this stock had a very light walnut ting to it before oiling, I hope this helps, all the best, Rob. PS If you get stuck PM me and we can go through it. Quote Link to post
Silverfox 0
Hi Gluebeam, Have done this myself; a few tips for you: 1. Spend as much time as possible cleaning and preparing the stock before oiling it. You need to get a smooth, almost shiny finish before oiling. 2. Use boiled linseed oil and to start, mix with about half as much pure turpentine. The turpentine pulls the oil into the wood, but it must be the pure turps and not the cheap turps substitute you sometimes see in hardware stores. 3. On later coats you can reduce the turpentine, but I always add a little as it seems to help. 4. As to how often to apply, I stick to the old saying of once a day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and once a year thereafter. Rubbing it in with the fingers a little at a time is good advice. Hope this helps. Quote Link to post
