22-250 or 204?

Recommended Posts

If I were to be changing my 243 and potentially 223 as well, into one rifle to shoot foxes, from up close to far away (magical 400 yard mark), 22-250 and 204 spring to mind as calibres to do that job.

243 is a big loud for everyday use, and 223 a bit wind-affected that far out.

204 and 22-250 look similar for energy downrange, and people say very good things about both. I see the rifle selection for 204 is very limited, and I hear tales that anything other than 39/40 gr bullets are a bit doubtful for Charlie.

But, I had a 22-250 before and it can only be described as f***ing loud, and even moderated I suspect it's going to be 243 league. I know little of the 204 in this department.

So, given my potential desire (I am filling in an FAC variation for something else and I have a spare slot to choose something for!) to have:

Lowest noise

Accurate

poke at long range

decent ballistics to 400 yards

Which would you choose? I am getting into reloading too, if that has a bearing.

Cheers muchly :)

logic if you are starting to reload try the .243, excellent for both long range and short range, try the A-tec mod but be quick as they are getting scarce, and the maker is supplying the army so will be flat out with their production.

reloading ammo, no problem to head shot rabbits id you need them to 200 yards, 58 grain v-max accurate as heck.

Now long range foxy 87 grain v-max, 70 grain blitzking, with mod on the .243 is very quiet, but the .204 is an excellent long range calibre 400 not to sure though,

reloading is the way, and i would suggest you give the .243 the option, my choice anyway......

my .22-250 moderated with a t8 is no louder than my mates moderated .223, i havent heard much about the .204 but is it not required that a special powder is used in this round which is not open to the market of us normal folks? you really cant compare the rounds out of the muzzle they are completly different, you mention about a round which would buck the wind better than a .223 REM. if a .204 round at 45gr doing 3625ft/sec and a .22-250 round at 50gr doing 3945ft/sec i would have thought the .22-250 round would be better in wind they are renowned for being good in the wind.but i guess its just preference you couldnt try a poke at someone elses .204 i know the round has only been on the market for not even 6 years and people with a 204 is uncommon but you could try your dealer?

make enqueries here for price,

http://www.rimfiremagic.co.uk/ i think about 299, but you won't buy a better mod. for that money.

my friend has traded in a ruger .204 for the new sako 85 in .204, he has taken bunnies at over 350 yards and foxes out to just over 200, So i'm not sure what they will be likw at around 400, if i get a chance i'll run some ballsitics on energy for you. at 400.

Mr L,

Have you considered 6mm br, low recoil, superbly accurate. Reloading components available, can push bullets upto 22/250 speeds.

i wouldnt buy the 204 inless i had the reloading gear at home ready for it. if you get a good mod for the 22/250 its no louder then 223 mr l my 22/250 with ase mod is no louder then my mates 223 with the same mod ?

with 22/250 you could go from 40 grain bullets up to 60 grain so have more choice in bullet weight. i would save the money and reload the 243.

imo all are too much for rabbits though
