LDR 29 Posted January 12, 2009 Report Share Posted January 12, 2009 Just to see how opinions vary when you start to train young dogs, what do you like to see in a pups behaviour???? For example i've just had my young bitch out, she'll be 6 months now and absolutely no bother at all, no silly deafness or pissing off into the blue, always wants to be by my side, even when Bruce is out with us, she'll follow him about, but is always straight back on command. Today however i took her out on her own to do some retrieve training away from the garden and Bruces' distraction....... ....... well she was even more like my shadow today, stops when i stop walks when i walk, only wonders about 6ft in front of me and comes running if i dart off in the other direction, personally this is a trait i like to have in my dogs, think it pays dividends if ever you need to make a hasty retreat, as its alot easier to cover the ground without keeping hold of the dog...... ......... now i always start young dogs off retrieving with rags and then give them tennis balls to retrieve.......now in the garden Sprint wil do a couple of retrieves of the ball but its nice and enclosed and you can set it up so she cant really fail...........so i thought i'd see what she would do in a wide open space..........To be honest she was no different when she retrieved it, all legs and springing and straight back to hand....... ........ Now i have a preference about dogs and balls, and this is just from my experience so i know its not gonna be the case for everyone, but of all the dogs i've had that retieve live game, none of them have ever shown much interest in tennis balls, maybe retrieving 5 out of 30 thrown, the rest of the time just a blank look comes my way!!!!! Today little Sprint showed the exact same interest, which 'for me' is a definate encouraging sign.......... So what do you like to see or not see as they progress with training and age?????? I like to get mine to retreive as much different stuff as possible, rags, keys, hats, dummy's fur, feather. I believe it keeps the dogs attention longer rater than throwing just one or two different things. whin 463 Posted January 12, 2009 Report Share Posted January 12, 2009 i start them fetching an old sock filled with paper and let them after about say ten weeks a dry rabbit skin then three or four months a bit of dry roe skin then once there roughly fout to five months , jumping with dummi about two feet , graduly put more weight in it helps strenthen there kneck and gets them usd of weights ie hare big buck hill rabbit , i then get them jumping in van with dummy and on front seat of car or van usaly do that when there no other dogs as when your roadsiding alone, heel jump out motor catch or miss and come back to motor with game , especaily if we are driving stubbles ,my old coli line jump [bANNED TEXT] in van or back seats with game ideal for quick jaunts, were time is the esence in and out quick no feching about, i some times drop game anfd they go and find it as i like them to take me back to a kill thtas a bit more harder to train but you can if your gott the [bANNED TEXT] make up of dog , Quote Link to post Share on other sites

arcticgun 4,548 Posted January 12, 2009 Report Share Posted January 12, 2009 My Beddyxgrey pup sounds like yours mate, she is doing really well, never wanders far, retrieves exceptionally well (never gets bored), comes back when called, I really cannot complain at all, really intelligent pup. Her only problem appears to be biting at my terrier, usually to instigate a chase, but if told she does stop. She has been a pure pleasure to train, and take out walking. She likes nowt better than disturbing pheasants and trying to dig up rabbits sets, hope yours keeps coming on well, atvb Richard Quote Link to post Share on other sites
blackpack 70 Posted January 12, 2009 Report Share Posted January 12, 2009 my 14 week old pup is like yours ldr follows me everywhere at times a bloody pain as i keep tripping over him he is retrieving a rabbit skin already which i throw only 3 times a day so he doesnt get bored comes when called or the whistle and when summer comes i will start him retrieving in the edges of the field as these will be longer so he will use his nose then i will take a dead rabbit and shove it down a rabbit burrow so he will hopefull mark burrows.
