Whippet quarry

Recommended Posts

Dont kid yourself people, there great dogs, superb in fact, great to watch as keen as mustard and sometimes way too much prey drive for there own good....BUT, aint there always a but. :D ......I dont believe they will take the knocks, there skin in amazingly thin, they wont hammer through hedges or bounce of wire anywhere near what a more robust x will, and they dont have the weight or frame to regularly take bigger quarry.

They are the most sporting dog I have seen on the lamp, but they dont catch or handle the bumps like a good robust lurcher, no matter what people say.......

disagree, mine will break any hedge

this is where she ran through a hedge in october

I dont know if you can make it out but she has a swollen lip and a few bites

A few interesting points raised.

To start with, I wouldn't entertain anything that has a KC registration, these are not proper working dogs, but animals bred to physical type, they add nothing to a working dog apart from good looks. I would say that applies across the board. I have had someone bring out a show type whippet and it looked odd and was useless. Would rather go hunting with a stuffed toy, at least you could throw it at the rabbits.

Next point, rabbits. Thats it, rabbits. Cant run them on anything else, they just aint big enough. All theoretical of course and based on pre ban experience and the vain hope that the next government will change the law back again. Whippet crosses struggle on hares, even on the lamp. You may pick up the odd lucky run but it wont be on a regular basis. Foxes, same again, too small. And I 've seen whippet crosses on foxes, game little dogs that they are will have a go but I dont think its fair. Its more akin to dog fighting, a drawn out affair that isnt good for the image of hunting, the welfare of the dog or your pocket when you have to pay to have the dog put back together at the local vets. Yes, I know someone is going to say they have one, or have seen one that will do all of the above and more, and I'm sure they are around but are the exception rather than the rule.

Next point, why do you want a whippet cross anyway. That dont hold any advantage over a greyhound cross. I know they are smaller but why do you need a dog so small. They may be slightly quicker from the off, but not much. They may be more agile, but again, not by much, and an experienced lurcher doesn't follow the every turn or jink of a rabbit anyway. They seem to anticipate when and where to strike without the need to run around in ever decreasing circles. A bigger dog can stand a higher work rate for longer too because they're not going everywhere flat out.

Now for the cross itself......If you're considering the whippet cross I'd assume rabbits are the quarry. Collie cross will be fine, as will a bedlington cross. I really rate irish terrier crosses over beddies. What matters is how much experience you can give the dog and how you bring it on. Maybe an emotive thing to say but there are more bad owners than bad dogs.

Your first point about KC Reg dogs is a load of SHITE, unless that is if you have seen every KC reg dog out working. As you havent then this displays your lack of understanding in dogs. You could of read all the books there is to read or been out with a few dogs, but still your knowledge is limited. All my dogs are KC and would work well with any of your dogs, holding their own and doing what they are bred to do.

Ive not seen any books wrote by you so why should anyone take note of what you spew out.

Mine against yours anytime

Im reallyjust interested in what all you guys n gals run pure whippets on? Im looking into getting one (pure bred) and im interested to see what I could possibly put it on.

Would like to see some pics if possible :D

Cheers

Jordan

I am sure many purebred whippets will do the job ,but my own preference ,purely for bunnies would be a 3/4 bred whippet x a good beddie line like Gutchcommon. My ferreting partner Magwitch has one of these ,Ted he nails bunnies for fun has a great nose for marking and Saturday dug about 3 out ,he draws rabbits and is hard as nails coming off knocks that would put a big dog out of the game.Pics of him can be seen in the ferreting section ,Ted and Rainers day out.Ted is a Mick B/rown Whippet to a whippet Beddie,Gutchcommon lines.

Yes ive wrote books and given contribution to many others, which meant i had to research my subject.. This research was not based on my own thoughts and ideas but of many others too.But thats not my point, you made a comment about KC Reg dogs saying they were not proper working dogs, what a load of shite.A number of KC reg dogs may never work or get involved in what they were bread to do,but taking that point a lot of crosses never get to do what they were bread to do eiher, its down to the choice of the owner what they want their dogs to do.

Enjoy your dogs.
