shinyspade 2
i have allways liked whippets. but for f**k sake reading this thread you would think they are wonder dogs ( rose coloured glasses) they are pot fillers. rabbit catchers. speed merchants. and at that job they are great to watch. on the other hand they cut up badly cold wet weather is hard on them and they are to light to cleanly kill bigger stuff. these are things i have observed first hand. yes they are tough little buggers. but they arnt biult for it so that can go against them also. espesially with over zealous owners. this is based on watching quite a few whippet and whippet crosses. in my opinion its horses for courses and whippets are for rabbits. Brimmer 220
I really want to add to this thread, but experience has taught me over the last few months don't say anything negative about whippets. Carry on everybody and in a few season's time see if you still feel the same way! Quote Link to post

Whippets are awesome. Shame awesome did not have a long term plan for them. Quote Link to post
Guest dances
i hate pure whippets, to small, fragile, mental, tiny little jaws. 18 inches! wat fecking good is that. Smaller than a fox. useless to me. Now a cross, i have a half bitch. lurcher/whippet. She is smarter than most, as clever as any collie. Tremendous pace, agility and stamina. Will run all night. Now onto the matter of Game, she is 2 at the moment. As i am at school she has between 1 and 3 nights a lamping each week as that is all i have time for. More often than not it is 1. since ive had her she has had, lamping, mind we got small fields. 8 hares by herself, 24 doubled up (her doing alot of the work). 20 fox doubled up, we are yet to try her by herself and is unlikely we will. 2 roe by herself and 9 doubled up. Now i dont keep track of rabbits as it would be to high and a leggy collie can catch a rabbit but she has easily had a few hundred. She will split any hedge, she has split blackthorn, bramble, hawthorn, copses etc. she has more scars on her face from cover than alot get from fox. She is no bull cross and i doubt she would do a fox by herself as she is a small framed thing really but she gets stuck in and catches most of the ones we have had. Deer wise she has a knack of catching the back leg and then getting underneath and flipping it with her back. I am going to be honest and say she does make a bit of mess to them but hey she aint perfect but as damn as ill get. Quote Link to post
