Your lucky ! Breedwise for egglaying I'd recommend Leghorns (any colour), from a moral point of view get ex battery hens (this is very satisfying) or you could go the rare breeds route. Obviously bantam eggs will be a lot smaller

Keep ours freerange in a garden with 4' fence panels, they do fly (well flap about really) but have never flown away ! Keep em well fed n watered & they'll go nowhere (feed em pellets, growers at first then layers if over 20 wks with the odd handful of corn ....... fatten em up and makes eggs taste eggsellent) !!!

I keep mine in the back section of the garden which is a kind of mini-orchard of around 24' x 24'. I've currently got two bantams but I believe that's about enough space for up to four bantams. However, this is based on having them free-range and not turning the area into a dust bowl in summer and a quagmire in winter. If you have them in portable arks etc then you have more per square yard etc.

Hello,

I live in a normal street in a small town with no land just a garden, but I have built a chicken house with 4 Warrens inside they are excellent layers each laying one a day, they are very friendly and follow me whilst I do the gardening. My puppy Patterdale is broken in to them so they have been a wonderful addition to the family! :clapper::D
