no need to apologise just stick to the trapping bit of the forum if you now fook all about running dogs...

was planning to get a whippet in the summer, that is why im reading your section. its not a topic for modern day stuff all post seam to be pre ban ?

 

are you plannin to use your whippet on these longears ?

 

 

is that not what they were bred for. lift the ban a lets get the posts going is what im saying.

 

so why get on this lads back about a date then if your plannin on doin it yourself dosent sound right to me like

i didnt he tried to catch harres in an area he had tried , just given him other opsions

 

 

but he is a sportin lad like many on this site and dosent agree with nets.

get sommit with saluki in its lines. a whippet will blow up after a couple of hard runs mate.

after maybe chaseing catching them for mear enough three decades , the hare has changed there not always in the middle of big feilds as theyused to be alot come out at nite more nocturnal , unless left alone , localy we have big land butt hey rarely out unless certain crops in them but come certain times of year they get livly ,not hear to educate as there eeyes and ears everywere , but hares nowadays in some areas are like deer woods in day time and out at nite , hunted land for years and then bang you see them at nite ,were twenty years ago no big deal to get a chase day time times change and poor old hares gets stick from most and never eaten by most , people still have hares shhots more buzzards badgers all sort getting hares in some areas , man dogs , some areas now are cleaned out andyou only seee them in lamp ,pity realy

Harehunter mate they will be there, a couple of places i walk the dogs, you almost have to tread on them before they lift, if they're in big fields you have to be right on track to get those ones, get 2 or 3 lads to walk the fields up with a springer hunting up just in front and they'll lift mate!!!!!

i run to see the course ..not to see a hare tangled in a net.....if the hare gets away then its better then the dog on the day .....thats what hunting is about to me....not netting them or shooting them ....any tit can do that.....

thank you my Hunting friend, after reading some topics and posts, I firmly believe, a lot of people on here, have never seen a good dog work behind the hare, and if you really had a clever dog, he or she would hunt the field, put its quarry up 2 or 3 bends and the jobs a good un, In my day it was called hunt, jump, kill and carry, those dogs are few and far between the next one, Had a wee bitch called Tinker, collie,whippet x greyhound, only 23" high, but what a clever wee bitch, I bought her of an old travellin man, the first time I saw her run, he invited me out for a run just to show me how good she was, went on to the heart of the Famous Scottish, coursing ground, drove alongside the famous field called backburn, ((( thats were the champions, coursing greyhounds ran, up untill it was banned, opened the door of the van, told her, to SCUD BYE, A WAY OOT, she hunted the field just like a good springer spaniel, next thing the hare was up and running two or three tight bends, and she had it a big 7lb hare carried back up to the van he opened the back door, and she jumped into the van with it, this was back in January 1968, 3 months later, I was the proud owner of that wonderfull wee bitch, and to this day I have not seen a better allround bitch, when she was coursing a hare near the hedge or fence, she would, keep the hare of the fence, or hedge and turn the hare back in to the field, (((( I have had plenty, dogs that could do the coursing job and carry back which is Natural to a lot of good dogs, but for an allround dog and I have travelled this country, I never saw a better one, ((( and also she was a great wee watch dog, she had real metal in her,

border lad some cant train a dog to sit so what chance qaurterring a feild , ye there dogs out there that still do it its called the send away ,some have it in them some you need to show them abit , love watching a dog work on his own rake afeild up put the hare up woosh two or three good bends drops a shoulder and you hear the sqeel , especaily when out early morning and scent is fresh , alot of dogs would not rake afeild and well with all the roe sometimes not viable , as i ve let dogs out on hare they get the hare and saw a deer hare gets dropped and thye get the deer by that time your looking about you ,nowadays if you let dogs rake better having der broken unless you want to run the gauntlet iin day lite , there are places deer free and you can do that on a feild mostly rape whn its 4 to5 inches high or the odd stubble good sport

gate nets are unsporting and traditionally associated with poachers, it may say pre-ban but the ban only cam in ten minutes ago

quater the fields a bit to find them , always pay atention to the leywood side of little hils and rises in each field. hares will use forms out of the wind very often. cover strips, and set aside are also good places, dont ignore them cos there at the field edge.

 

also elecy pylons , make sure you walk under them through the bramble and long grass, wish i had £1 for evry one i have flushed from under them. also small spinys in the midle of big fields.

 

had a good few lads out with me over the years that just want to walk the midle of the fields, but i educated them

 

even hedgrows, depending on the weather . if there two of ya , and you have had no luck walking the middle of the fields walk either side and tap the hedge up with a stick. good luck TOMO

hare nets, gate nets, got there places to catch game to relocate maybe or if you havent a dog of the runing type alot of guys i hunted with years ago were foulding four ten men gate nets, snares , drag nets for coveys , long before lamps were popular and wel suchis life pre eighties there were not many god lites on the market for hares and al hares realy were coures localy in day lite as there were no shortage of them in any way as it was all crops carrots and corn no big bypasses they kill mopre than any dog
