Terrier got a morning out.

Recommended Posts

Old feller couldn't make it today so I used the opportunity to try out the 2 late litter jills and took my russel for the ride.

If he wasn't so damn antisocial he could come every time, but you all know what terriers are like.

Got there and it was a grim wet morning, and very dark. I was just going to do 2 small fields across from the farm as a few had been showing there, does not look good to the farmer if he can see them from his window!

The russel started off a bit fast, and it took him an hour or so to settle in, hence the lead to start with.

He soon settled down and started marking well, and covering the holes without pulling the nets off. (Just noticed he's stood on this one though dozy little tyke!)

The two young jills got stuck straight in no messing! Result! Good to see them stopping rabbits in there tracks first time out, had to dig them out quite a few times. Shame I could not get any photo's whilst they were working as my hands were muddy from digging in the rain.

No big bag but a respectable 13 , didn't fancy moving on to more ground after that.

well done brimmer

is your dog ok with the ferrets? did it take long to train it?

Dog is sound with the ferrets, they just mosey through his legs without a care in the world. Only put him on the lead as he would scare any of the bolters back down on a deep warren with his whizzing about.

He's over 8 yrs old now, he was a complete b*****d as a younger dog, fighting with other dogs, pulling cats out from under cars, tearing things up to get to rats and just generally doing as he pleased, he dodged the bullet a few times, but never been any trouble with the ferrets, he sees them as part of the team, and living in the yard together they all seem to get along well.

Training him is an ongoing thing but it took till around 4 or 5 yrs old before I had control over him, I can call him off running a rabbit or a cat if it's unfortunate enough to cross his path on a walk.

Shame I owned the dog really, in the right hands he could have done more of what he was bred for, he's only had a few foxes years ago, but I would never get rid of him now.

The hunting side of him took no training, it's a terrier, they just do it!

They are hard work to start with, but a decent marker is worth it's weight in gold. (He caught a running rabbit today by the way.)
