donk 12
Only time you would have to do that is if your dog attacked other dogs, socialised properly your dog shouldnt need it.Dogs normally know the difference between hunting prey and playing with other dogs. blaine goes out with the local dog walker for a couple of hours every morning after i go to work! off lead and unmuzzled and hes fine, and hes fine when i take him out of and evening to! he has coursed a couple of joggers on the common though! lol! Yeah but joggers are fair game arent they? Even those that hunt???? just messin [bANNED TEXT]
Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
I dont see why a muzzle is needed. Unless your dogs aggressive or untrained. My old collie used to round the school kids up as the walked through the park if I was unfortunate enough to be around a school time. Could understand them wanting him kept on a lead & muzzled. Can you not get the dog walker round to go out with you maybe at a weekend so they can see what he's actually like. They may just be been cautious because they are not their dogs. labsnlurchers 39
Also, make sure she knows all your commands and stress the importance of keeping to them. Tell her your rules for your dog (eg. walking to heel off the lead etc) so it doesnt get mixed signals as this could undo some of your hard work.
skycat 6,174
The reason is shes my mums friends and my mum has said she can walk the dogs during the day while im at school. And shes said that he would need to be muzzled. I said he wouldnt need one as he has been socialised with family and friends dogs. And has great recall already? Cheers for the help guys I don't know how old you are V., but if I were you I'd get some better advice from an adult local to you. How about taking your pup to a good training class: your vet should be able to reccomend some. Anyone who says that a lurcher needs muzzling would NEVER get near any of my pups! This woman has probably got some weird idea that lurchers are vicious because they catch rabbits: she needs educating. Try telling her that a lurcher is not being vicious when it catches a rabbit: the act of catching a rabbit is completely different to attacking another dog, for example. Prey drive and dog to dog agression are two different things. If you absolutely do need someone to walk your pup when your'e at school: use someone else! And just as a matter of interest: WHY exactly does your pup have to be walked when your'e at school? Why can't you do it before and after school: that is all part of owning a dog. Whatever the weather, day or night, I would NEVER allow someone else to walk my dogs: I wouldn't want them being taught things over which I had no control. You never know what situations your pup might find itself in: and with a muzzle on too! Doesn't bear thinking about.
