Elvis has left the building

Recommended Posts

Set of this morning for a bit of rabbit shooting the weather looked ok for a change so loaded up the dog, ferrets and guns picked up Ged and Elvis (dont ask) and set out what we hoped would be a good day. When we arrived the wind had picked up a bit and was threatening to cut short our day before it began, but we trudged on regardless determined to make the most of the day. Took my wee bitch along in an effort to improve on her marking, well when I say improve I actually mean start her off as apart from one ferreting trip last week she had never actually done any ferreting. She has chased numerous rabbits into burrows in the past and this was a chance to test her marking ability. This is the first time we've been allowed dogs on this bit of permission so it was shaping up to be a bit hit and miss with the dog but I was confident that she would step up to the plate. We hit into the bunnies almost straight away with two sitting out in the gorse but I hadn't loaded yet but Ged had two in the chamber and took the shot. Unfortunately he missed both lol :( but heartend by the fact we had actually come across bunnies sitting out we trudged further up the hill. The dog had her first tentative mark at the first warren we came to so we decided to pop in a couple of ferrets and see what happend. You know how it feels when your not sure if your dog's marking true and time passes and still no sign of anything, you begin to think to yourself does the dog know what it's doing, am I reading the signs right or is it a false mark. Well I needn't had worried as two rabbits bolted shortly after this in quick succession and were quicky. dropped by me and Ged, one each. Elvis was then given a gun and we moved on to the next warren, once again the dog's marking was spot on another three bolted two toward Elvis and one in my direction I dropped mine but Elvis was knocking up big mounds of turf with his and his two bunnies skipped into a burrow not far from the one we were doing.

At this point Elvis decides he doesn't want to shoot and his happy to carry the ferret box and rabbits so we move on a little further. Another mark by the dog and another two bunnies in the bag. Further up the hill we missed a couple more before dropping another 3 bunnies. The wind had picked up a fair bit by this time and rain clouds could be seen moving toward us from the adjacent hills. Elvis was beginning to feel the strain at this point with the ferret box and the STRONG STUFF game carrier over his shoulder holding six bunnies. But things were to get better for us and and more uncomfortable for him as the dog indicated at the next warren there were occupants needing to be evicted. In go the ferrets and shortly after another couple of rabbits on Elvis's shoulder. We eventually made it to the top of the hill and by this time the wind was at gale force with hail and rain driving into our faces. We were on the point of giving up and heading back to the comfort of the pick-up when the dog had a solid mark on another small warren. Bracing ourselves against the wind we popped in one of the wee jills and were rewarded with another two for Elvis to carry.

At this point we had decided enough was enough and decided to head back to the car. Walking was extremely difficult and with hail and rain driving into our faces we struggled back to the car. Having come down to the bottom of the hill again the wind was less of a problem so decided we would attempt one last mark to try and get Elvis to break his duck. On the way round I dropped another bunny then the dog marked another small warren. So we gave Elvis the gun and stood back to watch. After about ten minutes the gods smiled on him as the rabbit popped out and instead of making a run for it just sat outside the hole two shots in quick succession but we couldn't see in sign of a kill, so after some ribbing from us about changing his name to Stevie Wonder, Ged walked over to the gorse bush and quickly pulled out a dead bunnie....finally so after a wee victory dance from Elvis we called it a day and headed back to the car again soaked and cold but very happy. So there you have it, who says you cant have fun with rabbits?...I love this kind of shooting ashttp://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/style_images/progreen/folder_editor_images/rte-emo-button.png

Emoticons :thumbs-up: :hunter: it can be fast and furious and extremely entertaining. Other pluses for me was how the dog coped with her job and I am extremely pleased with her performance. All in all it was a good day despite the weather our Elvis at least was a one hit wonder. And who says lurcher and guns dont mix
