Nope, sometimes it can be hard not to. The way i think of it is basically that the dog just dosent understand, and thats your fault for being a bad teacher, just my opinion though ;)

It can be hard not to when they are really playing up but the dog more often than not doesn't really understand what you are asking of them but we expect them to know what we want - they aren't that intelligent. I think a calm but confident approach is good and I think a dog responds better to a person who gives off this energy more than people who are nervous, tense or angry and aggressive, even though I don't believe in dogs looking at us as pack leaders/followers.

no,i don't think hitting a dog when training does any good.i've don't hit my dogs and i like to think they trust me more because of it. the worst they get is grabbed by the collar and told in "that" tone that they're in trouble.they definately know when they've done wrong!

hit a dog and it'll never forget and may just get ya back one day

thanks for the replies chaps! thought it was me just bein soft but most of the lads i know hit their dogs and i think there only doin more damage! :good:

Ive pulled people for hitting their dogs, not just twatting them, but really booting them  Some have been 'dog lads', but most have been just idiots with pets.

The last fella i pulled was walking a dalmatian, the dog pulled to one side to have a piss against a fence,he lost the plot shouting at it,the dog dropped to the ground and lay flat on its side, the fella then started booting it and dragging it by the lead. Poor fukin dog was scared shitless,so i gave him a bit shove about and a talking to. I got a load of verbal off him saying it had nowt to do with me,mebbes hes right, just hate seeing animals abused like that.

There may be times when a dog needs a twatting? Certain breeds? I dont know? I dont know that much about dogs, but what i saw that day was a dog submitting to its master and getting the shit kicked out of it. Dont seem right to me,mebbes im getting soft in me old age, lol. :clapper:

Edited to add, sorry for all the swearing but it really boils my p@ss

Gotta cut 'em some slack to keep 'em keen.

A dog has got to know what it has done wrong, saying no to it doesnt work all the time.

Most of the time my dog will normally understand when I say no, but its times like running up to other dogs when I have shouted no, thats when I grab him by the scruff of the neck and tap him under the chin. Because that other dog could have done more injury to him than I could.
