Your opinions on shooting.

Now i have to say im not one of the bullet brigade :nono: , each to their own, but i feel strongly about this.

Now ´Pre Ban`, and having the option, i would much rather see a dog take a fox, deer, or hare; animals using wit against wit, testing each others speed and stamina to the max. I cant see any sport in lining a fox up in your sights from 1/4 mile away and dropping it where it stood. The poor blighter probably never even knew you were there, that in my opinion is trash.

Im fully aware that some people consider the coursing of fox ect as bad sport, but at least the animals gat a chance to survive. The fit and witty get away and the ill and old get caught, this is also a better way of natural selection, ensuring only the healthiest of each breed survive.

Your opinions please.

Sport (and your definition of it) OR Control..the answers are different BUT..

so foxes dont kill for food then?...I spose they eat at macdonalds then get together and decide to go beat up some pheasants

Funnily enough where i am the foxes do raid the bins and scour the carpark at mcdonalds :clapper:

I once videoed a vixen carrying a 'Greggs' bag with a pie or pastie in it back to her young,a few days later i managed to entice a cub out of the sett by placing a pastie near the sett and hiding in the hedge.

Aye mate you cant beat a good Greggs pastie in my opinion :clapper:

Personally i don NOT approve on taking deer with dogs but thats JMHO.

Whats the difference in a dog taking a fox and a dog taking a deer? Is it just a case of you enjoy shooting deer so you would like them all for yourself rather than see someone else enjoy persueing them aswell?

Hello folks.

A stalker uses binoculars to scan a herd of deer in order to pick the one for culling.

It could be an elderly animal or one thats been injured by a vehicle or shot at by poachers or dare i say it a fluffed up shot from a stalker.

Could someone please tell me how to get a dog to run up to the herd and pick out the correct animal.

Sometimes i want a few rabbits for human consumption and pick out the 3/4 grown animal for a head shot in prefference to the very young, the milky with young or the tough old buck.

There are places for dogs and places for guns and personally i would like to see all shooters accompanied by dogs to help with the speedy recovery of the less than perfectly shot creatures.

if you want to pick out the injured deer in a herd it will mostley be the one laging behind when they get into top gear ,so there is a bit more than 50 50 chance the dog will run that one .because it is last in line when the dog gets to them.expereance before the ban has proved this to me time and time again ,over 25 years . but i always wanted the dog to get the biggest one ,but it did not work like that they always seem to get the smallest because they was more panicky and ran slower because they seem to stop and look what is happening before fleeing. Not exactly.. the landownder does not permit running deer with dogs because he has livestock (and because its illegal) so yes, i would be pissed off to see someone poaching deer on my patch. My main gripe with it is that its more indiscriminate, deer are often in small groups, how does the dog know whats in season? whether to take the old hind and leave the breeding stock etc?

that also goes for the shooter that has been out for hours on end to get one for the freezer ,he dont want to go home empty handed ,so he bags the only one he sees at the end of the day .

What difference does it make that he has livestock? Surely you canot shoot or run a dog in a field which contains stock which leaves the empty fields to hunt. A dog would cause less disturbance to the stock than a rifle. correct me if im wrong im just trying to learn from this site.

I can't believe the petty arguements that are being put forward on here! It's supposed to be a country sports forum, which if I'm not mistaken includes shooting and hunting of various sorts. All of us are under threat from the public wanting to ban what we do, and some of us have already lost out because of this.

I shoot. I don't hunt with dogs or ferret. I do go fishing sometimes. That doesn't mean I'm going to say that dogs shouldn't be used for hunting.

Grow up and stick together, otherwise soon we'll all be screwed. Just because one method doesn't suit your idea of what's right, it doesn't mean you should put down all the other sportsmen who feel differently to yourselves :wallbash:
