For me its between 7 and 8 weeks but it depends on the pups as to the exact age but the earliest i would allow a puppy to leave the litter is 7 weeks.

In some countries its illegal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks of age so it would be interesting to hear your views and see how the poll goes. Cheers :)

I am quite suprised at the results of the poll so far :o

Just wondering what peoples reasons are for selling a pup at 6 weeks old? I know by then most are eating solid food and only suckling from the dam occasionally but there are other things to consider like the behaviour tempremant etc.

Also with regards to weaning do people take the pups away or do they allow the bitch to wean her pups naturally? My pups stay with the dam until she has either had enough or they are sold. The kennel is such that if she wants to she can escape from them but if she wants to lie with them she can.

I let mine go at 6 weeks onwards. 4 weeks is defintately too young to be away from their mother, they are still very uncoordinated and babyish at this age, I have taken pups home at around 51/2 weeks, my eldest lurcher came to me at that age, no harm done as they were a well reared litter with plenty of socialisation, but 4 weeks is not on, they miss out on a lot of interaction with mum and littermates if taken too young and it can cause problems with behaviour in later life in some cases. I think 7-10 weeks old depending on the development of that pup. I read somewhere that 7 weeks was ideal because 6 weeks is too young and 8 weeks is the most fearful stage for a pup.

I do think that alot of pups are sold at 6 weeks old because that's when they start to become hard work, noisy, messy and greedy. People just want rid, but i think that extra week or so really helps them with dog to dog communication skills later on in life.
