im going to repeat what , leeview was getting at. and i have said it befor.

why do people find it so hard to belive there is a strain of lamping dog , that to a degree, breeds tru to type. after all most of us coursing boys have dogs that go back to merlin, eve. same story , but just added a lamp ;)

QUESTION FOR WHIN ;)

Did you not breed from the "tor of dartmore" and i asume to get the staminar for the hares, in other words you used a strain ;)

I have here on the ground now 2 pups, 5 months old, one of which has retained 100% the qualities that were so strongly passed on from her great grandfather that it is spooky. the other has also got a lot of those qualities in type of character though she has thrown a little more to the Saluki side of things.

Yes, those guarding, retrieving, biddable etc things that were so strong in him have been diluted, but the majority of pups with his blood in them retain those qualities and you can see the type a mile off.

Some dogs are very prepotent (stamping their own qualities strongly on whatever bitch they go over), and that is obviously why people use such dogs over and over again, so whilst that original blood may be well diluted, the original traits are being preserved by sensible matings: and of course this happens with coursing dogs as well as lamping dogs.

I can see various traits coming out in my pups and recognise which grand parent or great grandparent they have come from: fascinating stuff.

THE point is in the 1980;s nearly 30 years ago these so called unbeatable LAMPING STRAIN WERE CATCHING A vast amount of very green niave game on real good ground .I THINK THERE WERE A LOT OF DOGS BACK THEN WHO COULD OF CAUGHT THAT AMOUNT OF GAME ON THE RIGHT GROUND.majority of places now adays are far more pressured ;AND if you are lucky enough to have acess to ground lifting with game you are a very lucky person. THE dogs what have been mentioned probaly were very good dogs back then;BUT like ihave already said the game was alot easer back then ;and anyone who has been there and done it and been honest would admit that.PUT it like this i know a man who lamped in the 1970;s 80,s who could go out of his house at 7 oclock at night and be back for 10 and regularly catch 30 40 rabbitts local area;s.AND HIS BEST EVER NIGHT WAS 83 RABBITTS WITH ONE DOG a LABRADOR GREYHOUND FIRST CROSS.HE IS IN HIS LATE 60;s and what he doesnt know about dogs isnt worth knowing;and he will admit the game majority of places is alot harder to catch.THE MORAL OF THE STORY DIFFERENT DOGS ,DIFFERENT GENERATION.
