SA1Gunner 0
finurz, I am not trying to tell you what to do fella, I like you style, nothing wrong in trying to make something happen for yourself, if you sit on your hands, you will be thinking the same thoughts in years to come, it is better to try and fail than not to try at all, you put the effort in and I think the right gamekeeper will give you a crack, voluntary to start, then in time you prove your worth you never know. This is what I would do if I were you, find out all about the gamekeepers within a distance you would be happy to travel, say 5 miles on a bike or 20/30 or 40 miles in car, if you are not driving you may need a driver. Then go and visit them, introduce yourself, a nice strong handshake, take small bottle of whiskey with you ( for later ) try and get a feel for the gamekeeper, some will be offish, don't give them the whiskey just your business card and the offer of voluntary help, but you may hit it off straight away with another, now he's the one you should give the whiskey to. He might like the way you are, try and get him to tell you a few tales and look interested, I bet the tales will be worth listening to though, just listen to what he says' he will have more experience and stories than the more experienced of shooters on here. Don't overstay your welcome, when you think it was a good meeting, give him the small bottle of Whiskey, thank him for his time, give him a business card with your contact details on, then offer him your help ( voluntary mention your landscaping skills ) tell him you would be honoured to work alongside him and you are eager to learn, no matter what the job, whether it's habitat control, feeding or even the jobs he hates, this is where you may get an opportunity, every gamekeeper has a list of jobs they hate to do, so if he thinks he can use you ( in a positive way ) to help his workload and it won't cost him anything, I think you will be off and running. Good Luck, go and do it. Quote Link to post

osimons89 0
hi im a new member. i was at college two years training to be a keeper. i sopose im one of the lucky ones i now works as a underkeeper in belgium. all i can say is at college get your head down and do the work ur mates may take the pi** when your doing your work rather than going down the bar but in the end your toutor will notice and hes the one with the conections hes the one you will ask for a refrance. when it comes to work placements dont be scared to write to the bigger estates there the ones with the high work loads and a good report from a well known estate and keeper look good on you C.V. good luck ollie Edited January 7, 2009 by osimons89 Quote Link to post
