Do you think that a saluki grey would of been better suited to deer/fox pre ban?

i dont know about deer but where i'm from i rarely hear anybody comment anything good about saluki/greyhounds taking fox... would it be possible that maybe thats why there is alot of saluki/greys x bull/greys popping up????

Hi guys, just after your opinions on deerhounds.

What are they like as a breed?(any pro´s and con´s)

How are they to train?

What were like on big game(pre ban) compared to other big game dogs, saluki, bull x ect?

Are they any good on rabbits?

Would you prefer a pure deerhound, 1/2 deer grey or 1/4 deer grey and reasons for your choice.

Would never vouch for the deerhound breed on the whole, but can comment acurately on what Ive had and seen

This is certainly a breed that is divided into working stock and non working..Even if some of the so called experts, inside and outside the breed will disagree. Get one from noted working strains that are still being worked and they are quite decent, the best being between an average and above average lurcher..

Ive killed well into the high twenties of rabbits with many of mine, theyve all killed hare, they inialate roe and totally destroy fox..Ive never had a foot injury with a deerhound ever, and any foot troubles that could occur with first crossers, (as with any cross) probably comes from the greyhound side anyhow, Ive never had to stitch a deerhound through fox, Ive never had one quite and Ive never had one that couldnt be taken out every night of the week if required and Ive never had one yap, all have been natural retrievers and jumpers. As for being soft, Ive seen a deerhound break its leg on a sheep trough, chase the rabbit, kill it, and jump a wire fence retrieving it, with its back leg waving in the air like a flag. The trouble with deerhounds in this country is deerhound owners, too many of their owners take them out into a field, they see a rabbit or hare, the dog makes a half hearted attempt to chase it and low and behold, they become the proud owners of working/coursing deerhounds..These are cross bred for lurchers, and a lot of these dont make the grade..

Owners are breeding hunting traits out, they are breeding too big and they are breeding structural and health faults in. The heart problem mentioned is a direct result of breeding too big, deerhounds are not designed to be 34 inches and weigh 120+ lbs, plus, a few wolfhounds have been secretly added to knock up the size for show, this has brought in cardiomyopathy, a condition deerhounds never had, but wolfhounds did...

Too many hairdressers among the deerhound people now, not enough good dog men and too many novices clinging to judges or commercial breeders aprons Im affraid..and novices teaching novices is a dangerous game. We have almost lost the best of the good working stock of deerhounds in this country, the daft hunting ban the last nail in their coffins..

A lot of the best lurchers for all round ability in the country at one time were dogs with a percentage of deerhound in them, certainly the best dogs Ive ever seen were between the 70`s and 90`s when there were a lot of this type.

Yes you can get some good deerhounds, and yes you can get some shit, and this goes for crosses bred from them, and this goes for every cross.

Ive laways kept deerhound lurchers, they do for me what Ive found no other cross can give me..they certainly wont suit everyone, but, what cross will..

Depends on where they were bred and what you are running them on. All working Deerhounds have been out-crossed to Coursing Greyhounds somewhere along the line. I like to bring in a bit of Breardie to annd brains to the mix.

jim i have a working bred deerhound who most certainly does NOT have greyhound outcross thanks :icon_eek:
