Deerhounds and deerhound crosses

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, just after your opinions on deerhounds.

What are they like as a breed?(any pro´s and con´s)

How are they to train?

What were like on big game(pre ban) compared to other big game dogs, saluki, bull x ect?

Are they any good on rabbits?

Would you prefer a pure deerhound, 1/2 deer grey or 1/4 deer grey and reasons for your choice.

Any info appreciated

Cheers DG

he was a collie/greyhound x deerhound/greyhound... dopey big hoor but a useful enough dog in big fields... i was gettin him started on a few foxes in that pic...

i bred him to a track greyhound and got molly... she was quite a bit more useful but a couple of nights out lamping and she lost her edge

i had deerhound greyhounds for a good few years and they all have done the job.this breed wins my vote all the time

i have both pure deerhounds and deerhound x greyhounds. They are not good with pain :tongue2: ....worse than any other lurcher or sight hound ive known...the chase instinct is high but can be quite hard to enter to actually take stuff. Have coursed a lot of foxes over the years!!! Good on rabbits but due to sheer size are not good at turning. Health wise its vital to ensure that they come from heart tested and liver shunt tested parentage.

my old dog jock was well over 2 years old before he learn't to catch anything... and he was a real screamer if he got bitten but his strength was amazing... any fox he managed to catch recieved the most violent shake i'd ever seen...

some of the dogs pictured above look small for deerhound crosses?? just wondering what percentage is in them?? i put jock back to a greyhound to bring down size and get a bigger turn of speed!! i got what i wanted but i was missing a bit of drive... they were all right for some lad/lass that was only headin out on the weekend but at the time i was lamping any night i could get and she just wasnt up to it... if it was'nt injury then it was lack of heart!! perhaps the deerhound breeders like doxhope on here would have blood with alot more drive?? i believe dogs bred from doxhope can be seen running on the lurchermania dvd's... from what i seen i was impressed with his dogs catching ability
