does a lurcher realy have to have whippet or greyhound in it

Recommended Posts

now before people start screaming at me, i am fully aware that traditionaly lurchers are greyhound or whippet crossess. but does anyone run dogs slightly differently i.e deerhound x collie, deerhound x bull, saluki x deerhound, saluki x collie etc etc etc. this is an interest of mine as i run a collie saluki cross that lamps rabbits regulary and been close to hares 3 times but was mooching and hares were at least 150 - 200 yeards away but still got up behind them.

i dont take alot of pictures as i dont own a camera, i have one good picture of her thats been put up before. il see if i can get it up again.

A lurcher is "traditionally" a sighthound (grey, whippet, saluki, afghan(!), borzoi (!) etc etc crossed with a working or pastoral dog (collie, Alsation, Beddy,) etc etc. and a long dog is Lurcher to Lurcher mating or sight hound to sight hound, ie Saluki/Grey or so I was brought up to believe. Cheers, D.

I like the sound of a saluki X collie, never seenone though, seen saluki lurcher X collie though.

Would be good to see your pic, or anyone elses out there running this cross.

Theres a Saluki Collie round here, he plays with my dogs, well has tried to attack them once, but my GSD Grey got the better of him, anyway next time I see him I will see if I can get a pic and put it on, you can tell whats in him, he does have a sad story though, he and his litter was kept until 6 months old, and then they were starting to be trained to course, he was slower then the rest and not do much catching, well the original people said that they didn't feed a dog anything that he didn't catch, and Flash got weaker and weaker, his owner now stopped to get some petrol at a garage and saw some people getting him out the back of the van, she saw them put him on the floor and walk off, she caught them up and talked to them, and they told her everything, poor Flash couldn't even stand he was so weak, she got him, and took him to the vets, she thought that she was going to have to have him pts, but he has recovered and is now 6 years old and healthy, he is also a pet like mine, but I will see if I can get a pic, you can really tell what he is.

Mine is protective, he is a pet, but no-one would be able to get to me if he takes a dislike to them, I have had to grab him, running full pelt past me, as there was someone the other side who he didn't like, sometimes he gets that everyone but me is easy game, but he has never tried to bite me yet, when I was dealing with a dog fight once, he came in and tried to start on the dog who was then biting me, he is 3/4 Grey 1/4 GSD, but the only GSD looks he has are his ears lol, he is trainable when he wants to be, but when someone else is doing the training even things that he knows he will test them, he will look at the treat and just stand there, and wait, as some people will give him treats or a fuss instead if making him do what he is being asked, thats quite clever I think, he knows if he doesn't do anything for long enough he will still get the reward, he is also quite dominant and nervous though, he will push my female out of the way and is not allowed on the coach, as he will try to get higher then people, he will growl if given a inch, so we have to keep on top of him. When he comes for a stroke he will come to the coach and will stand almost on top of you, with his front paws on the coach and will push himself in front of you, he is coming round now, but he was from a bad breeder, and does have some traits of a badly bred GSD, but he has overcome some things, like separation anxiety, I would love one from a good breeder, I still love my Diesel but he can be hard work, whereas a better bred one would be easier. One good thing about him though is that he is good with kids, I don't have too many photos of him running as he is too fast and the camera to slow to actually work, you press the button, and then a min late it takes the photo

Here are some photos :)
