FAC, FIRST GUN and Permission

Recommended Posts

i am 16 at the moment and 17 next may, i wanted to know how old i would need to be to get a FAC.

i would like to get a rimfire .22 as i have used them before, i have no idea which one to get and with a relatively low budget some advice would be apreciated on that side of things as well, at the current moment in time i only have the one farm to shoot on and i would be using it for rabbits, foxes, other small vermin.

would this be enough ground (over 500 acres) andany other information that could help me,

there is a wealth of knowledge on here and i would like as much help as a can get

thanks

There is no smallest bore for Fox in law, its what your Licensing Dept decides.

To be honest, unless you have proved your skill with a rimfire, then you are highly unlikely to be allowed to use it for Fox.

The smallest calibre that is generally used just for Fox is the .22 Hornet, but that is becoming a dying calibre, pretty quickly.

In a nutshell.

A .22 LR for small vermin and Rabbits, a .223 for fox. This is what most Rabbit/Fox shooters cut their teeth on nowadays.

more questions

how do i 'prove my skill'

i want something current so i can get ammo etc

what does LR stand for?

and could .223 be used for the other small vermin as well? is it rimfire?

OK, here goes...........

To get Fox on your FAC for a Rimfire calibre, takes a lot of Ammunition, and normally many years of shooting Rimfires. A few lads on here have it, but not many.

LR = Long Rifle.

A .223 is a Centrefire cartridge meant for larger varmints, such as Fox.

Lots of Ammo for a .223 about. You can shoot Rabbits with a .223 but only if they are head shot or there will be very little left of them. For Crows etc, then its just destroys them, so has the desired effect.

im in exactly the same boat, im 16 turning 17 in may (18th) looking to get my first shotgun and possibly a rimfire later. looking forwards to seeing what info you get here. i think you can only be granted a fac at this age if you live or work on the land but i could be mistaken.

the two cheapest guns, and they were in the top five best selling for the money, is rugger 1022 or the one i have is the brno cz american, the rugger is a semi auto and the brno is a bolt action and i`ve shot a few fox`s with mine. i payed £400 for everything all brand new, hope this helps you.

bout 150-250 for a second hand/new cz and bout 200 for a decent scope should get you sorted :tongue2:

really the gun is the same as the scope and where to buy?

thats usually a good rule, the gun will only be as accurate as the scope you put on it. as for where most good gun shops will stock a wide range of rimfires, i think a good cz will be sweet, good quality for a good price.

well the cz range are bolt action. silencer id go for a sak one which should cost you bout 35squid. as for the licence you just apply for it along with the rifle in a separate slot they will take the same time. just state 1 .22 rimfire rifle and 1 .22 rimfire silencer. :big_boss:
