Which lucher type ?

Hi , I am hoping that you guys can give me some advice.

 

I am looking for a small lurcher that will be good on rabbits in close , hilly terrain , where acceleration and speed is more important than distance and stamina. Would need to be equally useful at bushing during the day and at lamping @ night.

 

It has to be smallish dog because the dog will be a working pet and will travel to various events and on holidays with our other dogs and we only have limited space in our vehicle. Most of the space is taken up with the deerhound ! From an aesthetic point of view I like broken coated dogs , much like a deerhound.

 

I believe a Beddy whippet would encompass all of the attributes , am I correct or is there a better cross out there for me ?

An all rounder would be beddy x whippet x grey x collie. You have great attributes in all four dogs they make great all rounder's.

I have ran this cross for 5 years now and if you can put up with the stubborn streak that i have found in mine they are as loyal and useful as they come. Thats my opinion no doubt there will be other breeds people favour over this type i am speaking from my experience of this game intelligant little dog. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

were do you by beardie whippets mate as there thin on ground , get a proper racing grew cross colli , with bone intelegence for just rabbits ,if you are in no rush , they are about mickys dog would suit you but there not many about ive got a colli litter touch wood in three moons but you would need to be expierenced as they are keen dogs but the females are lethal for rabbits whatever , hope you find one , d slieght had some super little rabbiting curs hees in the c mand wekly heel put you on to some genuine people ,theyve one feild trails rabbiting contests lurchers are fech all about looks

Thanks for your reply, are you suggesting that a greyhound/collie cross would be suitable ? What would be a typical height for this type of cross?

I did stipulate that I was after a small dog. My wife already has collies and I don't want a dog any bigger than them. What advantages does this cross have over a beddy/whippet? In your opinion , what makes them more suitable?

hi mate cant beat a straight whippet for rabbits and as you have seen mine she will enter cover if she is on hes prey but have seen a good few beddy whippets and they also tick all the right boxes good jacket and excellent feet for your type of ground. Hi, it s another one of those, everyone will tell you there own preferences, or name there own bred of dog. You wont get the answer you are looking for as most are biasased.

 

Yes the beddywhippet will be ideal for you has everything you need. Works nets briliant, good with ferrets, great with stock, (temprament is spot on, never known a stuborn one) do exactly as they are told(if you train the correctly) fast, no bolting rabbit will have much of a chance, and they are excellent bushers, and will do the lamp if shown corretly...

 

 

I put saluki into one of my beddywhippets, purely for the stamina factor... a bit of stubborness crept in but nothing serious... beddywhippets are the one you are looking for yes...

make your own assumption look at all the feild trail rabbiting comps and working comps not one whippet one it not one beddie whippet one it talk to guys like d slieght my self who was a fiull time rabbit catcher , the [bANNED TEXT] colli and racing grew are very good dogs , something about 22 23 bitch would suit you bone stamina good fetchers markers hardy etc u dont win hunting trails with shit dogs mate
