Personally i think people go completely over the top these days with supplements.....the reality is most people do not need peak fitness from their dog but give supplements anyway.....all it amounts to in most cases is expensive piss !.....a dog not being worked hard will see no benefit from supplements.....for general maintenance a good balanced healthy diet is enough....if you up the dogs work then in turn up his protein.....but this idea of giving supplements for the sake of it is just another needless trend in most cases.

If you are feeding a complete dry feed id agree 110%. When feeding raw/meats etc its essential to suppliment with fats/oils etc that meat alone cannot provide. :good:

From a study on vits

"Greyhound trainers commonly give high doses of antioxidants such as vitamin C and E to their dogs in the belief that these supplements will improve performance or will reduce the risk of injury. In the present study, however, the dogs ran, on average, 0.2 s slower over 500 m when supplemented daily with a high dose (1 g) of vitamin C. Although this time difference was small, it equates to a lead of 3 m at the finish of a 500-m race, and may represent the difference between winning and losing. In a previous experiment, greyhounds also ran slower when supplemented with a high daily dose (1000 IU) of vitamin E" (Marshal et al)

Human beings and guinea pigs are the only animals that cannot produce their own vitamin C. All other animals' bodies produce it in their own bodies so no need to supplement with that particular vitamin. I do think that a well balanced diet shouldn't need supplementing, though things like glucosamine etc are very helpful to arthritic joints in older dogs.
