.22 Rimfire rabbit shooting

Recommended Posts

Got my .22 LR Rimfire rifle back in June and was wondering which way you lot find best fillinf the pot? Do you like Walking and shooting from a shooting pole, from a hide set up by a warran or from a vehicle driving around?

Also what sort of time do you find best to go out? Dawn, dusk, midday or at night with the lamp? Many of you have any luck in the middle of the day?

Whist we're at it, what weather do you find best?

Cheers

numbers will allways be had from a vehicle because of the speed at which you can cover the land daytime sniping sessions fronm largeb warrens comes second for me anyway ,a morning mooch will put a few away but again pea nuts compared to lamping from a motor imo :victory:

Lamp from a vehicle at night, with a lamping partner. Choose nights that are least hospitable, ie drizzel, overcast, rain. Not clear bright nights. Wind is a good cover.

Just touch the rabbits with the lamp, not full beam if you can help it.

If they run away, put the lamp in front of them, they sometimes do not run in to the lamps full beam and give you another chance.

Best operate in pairs, one driver/lamper, one shooter. Shooter is in control of the vehicle and has responsibility at all times.

Ring th police before you go out stating start/finish times and what and what with you are shooting.

If they are still shy, or have been heavily lamped you may need to get a red filter for you lamp..

Edited to add, make sure you aware of safe areas to shoot in the daytime, as it will appear different at night.(People walking dogs, footpaths etc)

It sometimes helps for your lamping partner to call out ranges as well, it will appear longer at night, it always helps to get a second opinion for quick shooting.

I like the early morning and late evening walks off sticks, if I feel lazy the warren at 80yrds is good for a brief lay down!

I prefer spot and stalking much like deer hunting. Makes good practice on stealth. We don't have much warren type hunting for rabbits here and hunting rabbits from vehicles is illegal. We can only hunt from 30 minutes before official sunrise to the exact official sunset. So....no night rabbit hunting.

If an area is known to have considerable population of bunnies then a hide or stand is good way for us to snipe some cottontails especially after a consideralble snow storm when it is sunny. the rabbits are easy pickings when the come out to warm themselves in the warmth of the Sun.

I like to go for a wander around in the day maybe sit out from a hedge where i know rabbits are and then this time of year have another walk around in the dark with my deben ledray lamp. I use shooting sticks these are great for standing shots, and adjust down for seated shots when useing a small tripod camping seat.
