OK, I see the thing about not knowing where the round is going if you miss or surely in the case of more powerful rifles the round passes straight through the quarry. Now we all know that a shotty is a tool for the job, but what about the spread of the contents of the cartridge folks?

Some good replies so far

A shotgun is only good for 50/60 yards not much danger of and of that getting out of a permission i'd have thought!

This poll dosen't have the right questions and in fact does not represent the Forum in a good light! :icon_redface: why don't we have a poll about shooting cats! or taking out moving car windows!!!

Hunting is under enough pressure as it is without giving the Anti's ammunition like this!

Our argument is that we go for clean kills, and then someone is asking whether we take pot shots at moving animals!!!! are you insane?

i think this thread should be removed IMO

Also I have absolutely loads of land to shoot on, but if my permission giver saw me doing this he'd have me by the scruff of the kneck and i'd never see it again!

It's just plain WRONG!

With polls and threads like this it gives people an attempt to justify why an air rifle would be a better tool than a shotgun. If anything it should serve as a resource as to why it's not suitable.

We did this with foxes. We gave people an opportunity to say why air rifles for right for the job. So here we can see the justifications for air rifle on flying targets.

For the record I think shooting flying targets is dead wrong, and plain f*****g dangerous, but I'm curious as to why some think it's right. Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel?

Simply being here is enough ammunition for the antis but I'm hoping for a landslide poll victory and a result that shows why we're the best air gun forum on the net.

This is a tough issue but we're good enough to tackle it and come out of it on the right side.

not only is it dangerous its nigh on impossible!

even when a bird looks like its standing still in the air it can still be moving a fair old bit!

then how the hell do you keep sight of the bird through a scope while giving it enough lead??

compared to a shotgun charge an air rifle pellet crawls along at a snails pace, the bird simply wouldnt be there when the pellet arrived!

cheers

To Me its like asking whether you should drive a Maclaren F1 car in the Monaco Grand Prix or my Land Rover, they are both cars but they are meant for different things!

one of them is suposed to do it the other has it's own job to do! and it would be wrong in the idea of the sport to try?

Surely the poll should be......

1. have you ever attemped to shoot a bird in flight?

2. if so did you kill it outright?

3. I would NEVER do anything so irresponsible

people say they have done it but this could of only been pot luck I shot a crow in flight when I was a kid and this was just luck and no I would not try it again. I dont have a shotgun or shotgun ticket but if I felt the need to shoot flying birds I would get one its just horses for coarses. ;)

Agreed here too. People have said they can do it but the accuracy and frequency at which they can do it is embellished at best. f*****g downright lies most likely.

In the interests of openness this thread has stayed up but we're seeing a marked increased in threads that challenge what is currently our restricted sport. Shooting unsuitable quarry and now flying targets with air guns.

It's reckless. It's impulsive. It's dangerous but, in 2009, what are the motives behind discussing it on a public airgun forum? :hmm:

The Caretaker, come on mate, take a 'chill pill', breathe in, breathe out.

There you go man, keep as cool as you can, face piles of trials with smiles. It riles them to believe that you perceive the web they weave.

You're not The Messiah, chill out.:whistling:

Completely agree. if you want to shoot birds do it when they are perched (baring in mind there is enough wood in the way to stop a pellet if you miss) or put out decoys in the slim hope one will land in the pattern, other than that get yourself a shotgun.
