Have a look at the tasco silver antler range. A 40mm front lens is ok for daytime, 50mm is ok for dawn and dusk, also for lamping as it lets more light in. As for the zoom 3 - 9 is ideal for airguns mate. I use a 3 - 9 x 50 on my hw100 mainly for lamping, i use a hawke mildot 3-9 x 40 on the supersport carbine and a 4 x 42 on my smk xs78

so if i went for a 3-9x50 the zoom would be the same as my hawke but would just let more light in , is it worth going for a bit more zoom for pigeon head shot,s

That is correct Midge - 40mm lens is good for the day time, 50mm is better at dusk or dawn times, as it does let more light into the scope thereby giving you somewhaof an improved image quallity.

at 12ftlb a 3x9x40 should be ample for head shots on pigeons

I've used the Hawke 3-9x50IR on an HW100, Rapid FAC, Webley Stingray, HW77, and even a Ruger 10/22. I've had it 5 years, and it's been all across Europe and ever over the US. The optics are fine but the IR is very temperamental now. It works maybe 70% of the time.

Over all I would buy another should this one fail... as it hasn't I'll keep using it. ;)
